The book turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.
Sometimes a few good snapshots turn into something much more and here we have a wonderful picture book for young children and preschoolers. The author's husband discovered a nest with swallows above a bakery in France and luckily had his camera ready to take utterly endearing photos.

Their story is told in simple and very suitable rhymes, which young children will love and there's exciting activity for the kids as well.
The Little Bird Lost website offers free learning resources, where children can count from 1 - 10 or train simple addition and subtraction, all with the help of the cute baby birds shown in the pictures of this book.

The story itself, offers a good starting point for discussions about sibling rivalry, bullying or sharing in general, as we see how three young siblings push the fourth into the back of the nest where it can't reach the food the parents are providing, but luckily they have none of it and make sure all their young are fed equally.

Little Bird Lost is a very suitable bedtime read and a book children will love and no matter if you are young or old, it just brings a smile to your face.
I read the story together with my preschoolers and it inspired lots of questions about birds and how they bring up their young ones and finally let to an outing with fun bird spotting activities.

A delight for young (and old) nature lovers and an excellent concept for early counting. Highly recommended.

Illustrated colorful children's rhyming book about a little bird that gets lost.
Starts out counting the three baby birds in the nest but we learn there should be four.
Mother and Father come to feed the birds and they think they are hiding one bird...
Everyone is looking for the little lost bird, where could he be?
I received this book from Library Thing via the author in exchange for my honest review.½

I really enjoyed this creative story based on actual photographs of a family of birds. The rhyming text tells a lovely tale about siblings and the love of both mothers and fathers. It's a touching story made even more beautiful as it unfolds through wonderful pictures. A charming read.

Recommended!

Little Bird Lost by Steve and Kate Larkinson is the story of four little birds (baby swallows), discovered by Steve in the eaves of a bakery in south-west France. One of the little birds seems to have disappeared. Is he safe? Has he fallen out the nest? Can he be rescued? Do his parents know where he is? This delightful story in photographs (by Steve) and rhyming couplets (by Kate) will absolutely enchant readers aged 3-5, but actually, adults will also just love this little tale from the world of nature. What I especially enjoyed about this book is the beautiful photographs. I love children’s illustrations but the unique angle of actual images really struck me. Not only are they absolutely first-class and clear, but it is the perfect way to teach young readers about the real world of birds. Children are generally interested in animals and wildlife, and parents and relatives could use this delightful book as a springboard to other books involving wildlife. This is a great book for bedtime reading, and I would also encourage children’s libraries to include a copy. Children will enjoy the images as well as the captivating story. What a lovely start to getting your child interested in reading! As an added bonus, there is a delightful little cartoon book video on YouTube to really round off an enchanting reading experience. http://youtu.be/L4lweJRsryE

Little Bird Lost: A Rhymimg Picture Story
by Katie Larkinson

Adorable! I just love the way this reads. I have 5 grandchildren the oldest of which is in kindergarden. I can hardly wait to let her read it to me! Larkinson has written the couplets in such a beautiful, sing-song story I predict children will love it!

The pictures are a nature lesson in and of themselves. I think it is just charming this couple merged his photography of nature and her creative writing into our Little Bird Lost story.

Note: I was give an e-book copy in exchange for an honest review which I have provided.

Birds, to me, are very interesting to watch. However, they can also be greedy little bullies! With so many little birdies to feed at one time, it's very easy to pass one over. However, a mother always knows.

I found this book to be really cute. I thought the pictures were great and were a nice element that helped really bring the words to life. I loved the rhymes and I think kids will too. I would definitely recommend this book for young readers. I think children will be engaged in this book from the beginning to the end.

What a lovely story with beautiful photographs to illustrate it. I wish my granddaughters were here to read it with them. This is definitely a first book to read to or an early reader type book for children. The photographs will allow discussion as will the simple words and rhymes. Family, sharing and being kind can be discussed as can the caring and love of parents for their children. Great book and story with great photographs, too.

Cute picture book of baby birds hiding another baby bird so they get bigger helpings. They acted so much like humans--what, us hiding something? No, not us. Cute rhymes to share with your little ones. Brought a smile to my face.
