1539 Sir Walter Scott, by John Lauber (read 23 Nov 1979) For one who has read as much Scott as I have it is somewhat deflating to read this book: a little book that pretty thoroughly deflates the novels of Sir Walter Scott. I have always recognized the defects, and yet I have permitted myself to be caught in them. This book does find The Heart of Midlothian the best of the novels, an opinion which coincides with mine. But it finds far less good to say of Waverly and Rob Roy than I recall of them.½
