Odie Lindsey

A thoughtful novel that mines deeply into class and race in the deep South.The central characters are "Hare" (and his family) a man in prison for the murder of a black man and Collen an Iraq War veteran who comes back home and tries to blend back into life there. There are a multitude of interesting characters who are connected by blood and personal history. I believe the novel is a pretty accurate look at the dynamics in Mississippi during the late twentieth century.

I tried, really I did. I wanted to love this book.

The writing is almost poetic, with a strong sense of imagery.

But the story... What is it, exactly? I don't know. It's all over the place, choppy, and difficult to follow.

The characters are vague, at best. I wanted to connect with someone, anyone. Instead, I just found myself irritated.

I gave up about a quarter of the way in.
