This book truly is, as the flap says, a memoir of women whose fashion she admired, if only for a second. Earlier in the book, she describes her love of fashion and developing sense of style but further and further into the book it is mere chronicles of of women and/or outfits. That is lucky for me as I loved this profiles, short snippets of the namesakes, though I was entertained by some of the narrative from the author's life. From the profiles with a quick tip from most, Andrea Linett (intentionally or not) conveyed the lesson of the book: there is always something to be learned from those we admire, even if it is just that quick look as we pass them by. I now think it is is best to ask oneself "why" for every admiration.

(On a side note: having processed this lesson as a reasonable woman who has these "girl crushes," as this platonic admiration is called, I am left questioning why every girl crush leaves me feeling "less than." Alas, this is not in the book and I now must seek my own answers.)

This is a light read with short snippets - perfect for the busy women or the ADHD - that discusses a lot of fashion (though a fair portion of it being older trends, with discussion on how to make your favourite trends timeless). While shorts and profiles are not the writing style for everyone, I find it difficult to criticize this book due to the intent: it was suppose to be a fun book and it is a fun book. You will get some take-away tips, but this is a memoir, not an instruction manual.

This was a fun, informative book - felt like I was reading a fashion magazine, with more details. The book had lots of color photos and advice about how to wear various styles and clothing items - using a variety of real people who range in age and "looks" - all from the fashion world. Included info on hats, jewelry, hair and makeup. What I liked best was the emphasis on finding your personal style and being comfortable with what you're wearing. This was a guilty pleasure for me, read under the guise of "educating" myself.

In which a slim, financially secure lady, and her chums...models, dress designers etc- put together stylish 'looks'. And they are stylish and look cool (mostly..not sure about that woman in a jumpsuit. Or the one in denim top to toe. Or whether if I adopted the funky fashion tip of combining socks with wedge sandals, people wouldnt think I'd escaped from a care home...) But it's terribly prescriptive ...these ladies all have jobs where they have to look good but can have a bit of freedom. So lots of jackets, white blouses, smart jeans... The author merrily tells us at frequent intervals to have your tailor tweak a garment...since that would seriously add to the cost, it's a massive thing for me to use their services! Nothing here caters for the poorer, fatter, shorter female. You feel it's a bit of a prescriptive uniform...despite being told to wear what we feel right in, none of the participants do hippy clothing, zany prints...they're all smart navy and beige. Interesting browse from library (equivalent of reading a woman's mag) but wouldnt buy it.

Not a bad little book. The publish date is 2003, so it's a little dated but not horribly so. It gives recommendations based on body shape, which I like (especially bath suits). I have yet to try out their recommendations out since it's still too cold out to even think about that lol. I will update my review when I have tried out their recommendations.

Provides many pictures and guidance for developing a blend-into-the-fashionable-background closet. There are some useful tips here; for instance, I'd have never thought to shop for camisoles in the lingerie department (and perhaps that is why I haven't been successful finding any in recent years). However, many of the tips are ones I'd already intuited. That's not to say the advice is bad -- it's just limited by the reality of how many clothing suggestions legitimately exist. As an idea book for outfits, though, this book delivers, and given that it was developed by a fashion magazine, that shouldn't be surprising.

This book will eventually become quite dated, though probably in a charming way. It's feeling slightly dated already, so if you're interested, I'd say it may be worth borrowing from a library -- but it won't be worth buying again until 2003 becomes vintage.

I wanted to enjoy this book when I read it in 2006, but I didn't. It seemed at times very bent on impressing you with a conformity as to what was acceptably fashionable, rather than with what was office-appropriate or flattering.

At first I was quite enthuastic about this book, and it does have some very good points about creating a useful wardrobe, and the authors do point out in their introduction that you should take what they say with a pinch of salt and use your own discression, but it lost me with the shoes. All the shoes are quite fancy and really nothing I'd wear on a regular basis. While they did suggest snuggly coats they didn't mention that a pair of waterproof hiking/walking boots are an essential for winter.

It's the kind of book that I'd hand to a friend who was thinking about a wardrobe clean out or a young woman starting out but the styles and ideas are American biased, which doesn't always work as well in Ireland or England, where the office culture is subitly different.

Useful as a start but not quite enough as a comprehensive guide.½

My closet thanks Kim France and Andrea Linett. The guidelines given for every aspect of personal style are realistic and easy.

For the first time, it all makes sense. The tips they give you will last for years because the way that clothes are supposed to be put together, which they demonstrate very well, will never go out of style.

If you're like me and don't want to leaf through fashion magazines every month but you want to look like you know what you're doing, fashionwise, then check this one out. It tells you exactly what you need to build a wardrobe, what details to consider when shopping (e.g., when trying on pants, sit down and look at them that way; where on your body a t-shirt ends; what accessories will make an an otherwise chic outfit too prissy or too slutty), what underwear to wear with what pieces, and has lots and lots of pictures. The clothes and styles featured are not so trendy that this book won't be useful for the next five years. I used to hate to shop. I still do, but at least now I know what I'm doing and can avoid feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.
