C. W. R. Long

Richard Long was educated at Lancaster Royal Grammar School and studied Arabic, Persian and Turkish at Cambridge and McGill, Montreal. He spent 26 years in eight Middle East countries with the Foreign Office and British Council. Subsequently Director of Islamic Studies at Newcastle University, and toon meer of an exchange programme with Durham, he now writes and lectures on the history of Britain at the end of empire in the Middle East.
