- He was a learned cleric and scholar, but is perhaps best remembered as a grammarian. “As for grammar writing, another major codifier was Robert Lowth with his Short Introduction to English Grammar (1762), which had an enormous influence on the English language: there are many normative rules in use today, such as that you cannot use a preposition at the end of a sentence, which go back directly to this grammar.” (from a paper by Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade and Randy Bax, University of Leiden, 2002)
