I wasn't sure what to expect from this novel.

Vermont is a special place to me and I purchased it just to to see if it evoked the spirit I recalled.

It certainly met that. But aside from that what I found was a novel which seemed to give a life to each character that sucked you in to the various stories that make up the novel to the point that you felt a need to read each next chapter as you came to it.

If you like John Irvine but find him a bit long winded you might just find this novel to your taste

In 1964, Rose Mayer buries her second husband and wonders what she's going to do with the rest of her life. Reluctantly, she visits her son at his summer place in Vermont, where there are neither sidewalks, Democrats nor other Jews. There is, however, the Marlboro Music Festival. It's there that she meets Percy Mendell, a born and bred Vermonter who has never married, never voted for a Democrat, and never left the state.
Percy is facing retirement after a long and satisfying career as the local extension agent. He's also struggling with his long-held political beliefs: Barry Goldwater, the GOP nominee, is too extreme even for the party faithful, and in the November election, Vermonters vote for LBJ.
Author Deborah Lee Luskin tells this tender romance between these appealing 64-year olds with humor, wit, and compassion. Set against the backdrop of Vermont's changing seasons, INTO THE WILDERNESS is both a love story and a testament to the endurance of the human heart.
