This is an exciting continuation of the first in this series, "Ruin of Kings". I really like that this book focused on Janel's character... badass women abound in this series!

My gripe with this book is that it REALLY needs a list of ALL the characters, and their relationships, and their current and prior/other names. I really struggled to keep up with the story/deeper plot because I could not keep all the players straight, esp synced I read "Ruin of Kings" quite some time ago.

Really involved, satisfying story! The one thing I'd change if I could is she the names that look/sound the same. Makes it really hard to keep up with who is who. (Kind of like the Russian novels)

I loved this book. It played with the fantasy tropes in a way I found electrifying. What’s more, I loved how the story ended but left me wondering where the hell it was going next.

As the finale to the Chorus of Dragons series, Jen Lyons' The Discord of Gods wraps up an intriguing and far-reaching plot. Not gonna lie- I adore this series. I had hoped that one of my favourite characters would find a measure of redemption. In fact, I used his name for two characters I created for Bravo Fleet, a Star Trek writing group. The longest running one in fact! Alas, it was not to be.

The world-building showcases a creative mind, full of future potential. I cannot wait to read something new by Lyons. She paints a breathtaking, terrifying reality with her words, one filled with demons, dragons, deities, and their titanic conflicts. The intricate structure of the narrative might feel overwhelming to some readers, with its multiple plot points and simultaneous storylines. However, I found that this complexity gives the plot richness and depth.

Overall, The Discord of Gods by Jenn Lyons comes as a captivating read for fans of fantasy. Highly recommended!

****Many thanks to Netgalley and MacMillan-Tor/Forge for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This one was a bit hard on the ticker. So much going on in terms of devices. Differing POVs, woven timelines, several unreliable narrators, characters that show up in one timeline that you haven't been introduced to only to get the backstory in another timeline. It was a wild ride, and I absolutely loved it. Amazing magic, thoughtful world-building, and characters you love and love to hate.

In terms of character-depth, I thought the characters were very well-rounded, but the method of the story's delivery didn't leave a lot of room to really dig into their depths. Room for improvement there.

Otherwise, if you like figuring things out, and don't need a strong linear story, this is definitely for you. And a huge plus for me? The editing in this book is FANTSTIC!

Newest installment in the Chorus of Dragons series. It picks up with the aftermath of Kihrin's sacrifice.

Instead of having alternating narrators telling their stories in flashbacks, we follow many characters as they move to converge at the same place and time. Due to plot shenanigans, people share their memories of past events (and past lives). Some mysteries are answered, others become more murky. I end up re-reading parts (or huge sections) of the earlier books as names and events are referenced and re-contextualized.

I love this series. It makes me want to create a murder board to follow all of the clues and plots and characters. The skill in plotting is amazing. I think there is only book left, which saddens me.

Although I have read these hugs books as e-ARCs, I will purchase the entire series in hardcover once it is completed.

Very satisfying conclusion to the series. And yes, we do hear dragons sing.

Since I read this entire series as eARCs, and even though these are LONG books, I am going to buy them in hardcover when this book is published.

Loved this book. It is a long book, but it doesn't feel like it. I kept wanting to read just one more chapter... Also has some of the best use of footnotes in a novel since [b:Infinite Jest|6759|Infinite Jest|David Foster Wallace|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1446876799s/6759.jpg|3271542] and the [b:Thursday Next series|8247464|Thursday Next Series Characters in the Thursday Next Series, First Among Sequels, the Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book, Bookworld|Books LLC|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1348595443s/8247464.jpg|13095065].

There are a lot of characters and a lot of plot. Yet the end of the book is satisfying AND sets up the next novel. (I am so tired of books with cliffhanger and/or sudden endings.) It's been a while since i've enjoyed reading such an epic fantasy. In addition to a glossary, it has a pronunciation guide. I do hope that there will be maps and family trees in the next book. I read an ARC, so perhaps those were included in the final published version.

I cannot wait until more people have read it so that we can talk. In the meantime, i'll be reading Leigh Butler's read of it on Tor.

The second book tells Janel's story of what she was up to during The Ruin of Kings. Characters (and events) from the first book pop up here. I enjoyed the expanding worldbuilding, especially of Jorat and Joratese customs.

We learn more about Relos Var's possible motivations; he seems to be pulling a Xanathos Gambit. No matter what the heroes do (or not do), it ends up furthering his plans.

I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book in the series - i really missed Talon's voice. The use of alternating narrators seemed much more forced. That said, i still love the footnotes. (And i kind of want to be Ninavis when i grow up.) I don't say this often, but i really wish the books had maps and genealogies in addition to the various glossaries.

Nice but rushed
The title of the parts : setting up pieces / gambits suggest a chess board. And that is how i felt while reading it, being dragged around at breakneck speed to every corner of the board.
But alas very few times the different pov the other books have.
Still highly recommended series

I wanted to like this. I really really wanted to like this but when you find yourself skimming more pages than you can count then you know there's no hope and it a goner. I wasn't able to build any connection whatsoever with the characters and storyline, and more often than not it felt like a chore to continue reading this. I was at the halfway mark before deciding to drop it like it was hot before I was completely bored of tears. Sadly enough this failed to meet my expectations and I was not the right type of reader for this novel.

It's in a split timeline - jumping back and forth between two points in the characters life - which I hate. But it's also highly imaginative. I came across a couple elements that I hadn't seen in other books. Might give it a reread to see if it makes more sense and I am going to give the sequel a chance.

I picked this book up on a whim and am now anxious to finish the series! It was a bit outside of my normal reading material just because of the lack of romance and overt drama, so it didn't hold my undivided attention like some other books do and it take a bit longer than usual to get through. But every time I picked up the book I was blown away by how well written and how creative the plot was. Everything you could ask for was present, from a witty and sarcastic main character, to an dragons and necromancy. I loved they way that the story was told, as a recounting of events with footnotes and I especially appreciated that things weren't over explained. Sometimes in complex fantasy stories the narrative is overexplained to ensure that all readers understand each and every piece, but some things were left for the reader to infer in ruin of kings which I appreciated. Overall it was a very good book, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

3.5 (rounded up). I love the characters but the story feels very disjointed and like a big set up for the next book. Excited to see where everyone ends up and I enjoyed the new characters/retcons.

Good. It took a bit to get going and the duplicate framing felt a little forced but it really picked up in the end. I'm excited for the sequel (and hopefully final book?).

Like the previous volume in this series, this book tells a complex, epic fantasy story. Overall, a compelling tale, but I found I didn't like this one nearly a much as I enjoyed The Ruin of Kings.

I loved this continuation of the Chorus of Dragons series! My only sadness was not seeing Qown this time. I enjoyed learning more of the distant past, when the dragons were created, and of learning more of Relos Var's past. Can't wait for the next in the series!!

The Memory of Souls is the third book in this epic fantasy by Jenn Lyons. It was definitely worth the wait for this book. An amazing adventure story and without a doubt my favorite so far.
As with the first two books in the series, the story is told as a narration of events. Kihrin and Thurvishar are attempting to record the current events as they occur. The account picks up right where the previous book leaves off. Our heroes now know that the god Vol Karath is awake, though he is still imprisoned. They also know that at least one of the chains that binds him has been severed.
Even from his prison Vol Karath is able to cause massive destruction and chaos. The eight immortals have tasked Kihrin, Teraeth, Janel and Thurvishar with persuading the Monal Vane’ to give up there immortality. There is a ritual, once performed, will make them mortal and in the process strength the chains that hold Vol Karath. This ritual is the one that made the other immortal races mortal.
The Vane’ are strongly against this but if Vol Karath does escape, the entire world will be destroyed. Yet, everything has a cost and boy is that the case in this book.
I would love to say more about the plot but then I would be giving away some of the best parts. I want readers to be as surprised as I was with some of the events. For example, I learned a lot more about Kihrin, Janel and Teraeth’s past lives and it was very revealing and ties some stuff together for me.
This is probably one of the most complex series I have ever read. Not only is the world building complex but the characters are also. For the most part I loved it, but there were a few times when I had a hard time keeping up with who was who. Especially with all the reincarnations and body changes going on. I had to go back a couple of times and reread parts to cement everything in my mind. I wished I had taken notes as I went along then it would have been easier.
The characters are richly developed in this series and before I even picked up this book I thought that the author could not do much more to enhance them. She proved me wrong. There were new tidbits and interesting secrets that were revealed throughout the book. I loved how she parses them out and keeps the reader engaged. This is what makes this series so captivating. I can honestly say there is never a dull moment.
I recommend this book, and the whole series, to lovers of epic fantasy. For those readers that love an intricate and complicated plot with memorable characters, I think you will especially appreciate these books.
I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. For more of my reviews, and author interviews, see my book blog at www.thespineview.com.½

REALLY good fantasy novel with an approachable and easy-to-read writing style. The only thing keeping me from giving it five stars is the story got a little complex and hard to follow in a few areas. Overall great book!

A very long book about eldritch sorcery and elite conflict; by the end of it I was thoroughly confused about who was really related to who, and exactly how sorcery was supposed to work n this universe. I think it shows promise, but didn't really work for me.½
