Gorgeous illustrations add depth to a simple story about a mother elephant who must leave her baby for a short time. The writing is just on the wrong side of precious for my taste, but I have to admit it's a beautiful book.

This was a really cute, somewhat funny, book that my 4- and 6-year-old nieces enjoyed. It's about two friends (Owl and Rabbit) who learn that working together is better than competing with one another. The illustrations are lovely and detailed.

Some of the animals are obvious (dog, frog), while others are more difficult to figure out (nanny goat for N, xenops - a bird - for X).

Nice illustrations, but when my children flipped through it they found it a bit scary. I found reading it in silly voices helped that. But they didn't want to read it a second time and we returned it to the library quickly.

The gentle and moving prose generates feelings of fear and anguish for the plight of the animals but also sets a hopeful tone for nature's inevitable resilience. Backmatter includes a note on the author's experience with Northern California wildfires of the past couple of years, plus wildfire facts.

Very cute, with great illustrations. Owl and Rabbit take issues with each other's houses and try to outdo the other, until it all falls down. A lesson in not need to “keep up with the Jone’s” and how to get along with the neighbors.

This story is very cute and tells the story of how the bond between father and child can help you get through anything. It is also indicative of the way that whales migrate and what that looks like for them. I really enjoyed this story overall. I would also use this to help teach about migration and ecosystems. I also think you might be able to use this book to teach children about water and how whales communicate with one another. This story also gives an example of what good questioning can look like.

The illustrations are great, and the story is very cute. Poor night animals don't even know they're night animals! I love the panel after the bat tells them that they ARE night animals - ohhhhhhh!

My library was a big fan of Marino's first Night Animals book, so I was very excited when I saw there was a sequel!

The night animals are back and they're exhausted! Possum and Skunk, their eyes heavy with weariness, set off to find somewhere just right to sleep. Quiet, dark... and not full of bees! Bears! Wolves! Oops, Skunk got a little surprised there. Pooft! Aaaand, Possum is dead again. Don't worry Beaver, it happens all the time!

The friends, joined by a bear, beaver, and wolf, and running into all sorts of (stinky) situations, finally find just the right place to sleep... but it looks like somebody might already be there! Just when they're ready to collapse from exhaustion, the nice, peaceful, dark returns and they can finally get some sleep. Or can they? Bat and Owl have a few facts of life to point out to them, which is make it unlikely that this goofy group will be sleeping anytime soon!

Marino's delicately drawn animals are back, paired with expressive, weary eyes, panicked skunk explosions, and frequent possum death faints. While you can enjoy this from a distance, in storytime, you'll really want to get up close and personal to catch all the hilarious details!

Verdict: Although it lacks the element of surprise in the first book, this is still a hilarious adventure into the world of the night animals and their adventures. Sure to please fans and new readers of Gianna Marino alike.

This adorable little picture book shows lots of different African animals and how one little giraffe wants to be just like her big brother.

A gap-toothed and knobbly-kneed giraffe calf is playing hide-and-seek with her older brother. As she gambols across the savannah, she asks various animals if they've seen her brother, and describes him. The animals are confused - she's looking for a tall giraffe, but she's tall! "Not as tall as my brother." Says the calf. Her brother is brave, but she's brave too. Is she really as brave has her brother? When a leopard shows up, the calf will show just how brave she can be... just like her big brother.

Marino's sweet, repetitive story and light-filled watercolors combine to create a delightful story that kids and caregivers will want to read over and over again. The gentle call and answer, "You are tall" "not as tall as my brother." encourages listeners to read along and the numerous little secrets in the art will repay multiple reads. In most of the spreads, it's easy to see the watchful big brother, guarding his little sister as she playfully searches for him, but a more careful look shows a possible danger - a furry, spotted leopard who's stalking the calf. Or is he? The various animals stand out sharply against the yellow grass and green-blue sky, luminous with light. Rollings waves of the hills hide various creatures behind curled ferns, grasses, and a plump baobab tree.

Verdict: A lovely addition to Marino's comforting, thoughtful work and a great book to add to your storytime rotation. Recommended.

This is a sweet story about a mama elephant who must leaver her baby for a while to ask for rain since the land has dried up. She gives her baby things to think about so he can remember her and tells him to meet her where the moon meets the horizon. This book teaches that it's okay to be sad and miss someone when they leave, but they will come back. This book could go with a geography lesson about Africa's dry and rainy seasons.½
