Thomas Michael Maschler was a British book publisher and writer. He was born on August 16, 1933 in Berlin, Germany. His family moved to the UK when he was five years old. He was literary director at Jonathan Cape from 1960 to 1988 and was known for his ability to spot great writing. In 1991, he toon meer stepped down as chairman of Jonathan Cape. He was influential in the careers of such writers as Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Heller, Philip Roth, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, John Lennon, Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie, and other notable authors. Maschler's books included Declaration (1957) an anthology of essays, as editor; Publisher (2005) his autobiography; and Editor (2009). He was the co- founder of the Booker Prize (1969), a recognition for British, Irish, and Commonwealth literature. Tom Maschler died on October 15, 2020. He was 87.
