- Former co-editor of Iota poetry magazine, Bob Mee co-edits Ragged Raven Press and lives and works in Snitterfield, Warwickshire. Poetry collections: The Maker Of Glass Eyes (2009) and Paradise Road (2003). He has read poetry to live audiences since the early 1970s. He has also written books on boxing, including the critically acclaimed social history of bare-knuckle prize-fighting, Bare Fists (Harper Collins & Overlook Press, New York) which perhaps makes him the only poet to have had his writing reviewed in The Guardian, The Sunday Times, the New York Times, Playboy and Flaunt. Ali and Liston: The Boy Who Would Be King and the… door Bob Mee
Some good biographical glimpses of the boxers and commentary on their fights but very heavy on the management side of their careers. It also becomes annoying as it goes to great pains to show that Liston was not the insensitive thug as so often portrayed. One or two anecdotes to that effect might have been convincing, but repeating it multiple times diluted the effect of the argument. This was particularly true when he would get arrested or cheat on his wife. It also tended to undermine the case that Liston was anything more than a criminal who happened to make some headway with his fists. Interesting in spots but often ponderous as well.… (meer)
