Entonces, ¿qué es este objeto divertido que nuestros queridos perritos recibieron esta mañana? Un columpio ? Una piscina ? Un barco ? Para los más pequeños.

As the days darken, I read my students lots of books about darkness and especially about children countenancing fear. In "Dark Night," not surprisingly, in a forest at night, a cartoonish child finds himself frightened at the sound of an owl whereupon the child retreats into a hollow in a nearby tree. The owl is scared off by a wolf which is then scared off by a tiger ("'That tiger looks ferocious!' Felix thought.") and so on, until Felix backs into a door that leads down to the warmth of a rabbit's kitchen.

The rabbit and a scary disguise help Felix to emerge bravely from the tree and to finally turn the tables on the fearsome creatures. The two new, emboldened friends then celebrate with a rousing cup of hot cocoa.

I've been longing to see this book ever since it came out. I love de Monfreid's illustrations in various quirky picture books, especially I'd really like to eat a child and I was interested to see how she handled a board book format.

The book is formatted into a tall rectangle, and on each side of the spreads are metal bunk beds, as seen on the cover. The first spread shows a darkened room. Only one dog is awake and her frustrated eyes are clearly the result of the interesting noises emanating from the 2nd bed on the left (that's the white and brown dog on the cover if you're interested). The lights pop on and one by one the dogs switch beds, chat, and join a friend on the other side for a story. Finally, the night is over, Popov (the noisy dog) awakes, and wonders why everyone else is sleeping on one bed!

Monfreid's illustrations, washed in the blue light of night-time, are sweet and funny at the same time. Each dog has a distinct personality and drawing and there are little details like reading lights and stuffed animals to add interest.

Verdict: The plot of this is a bit complex for a baby or toddler, and the odd, tall shape may be difficult to fit on a shelf, but there will definitely be a small but appreciative audience and I recommend adding it if you are looking to diversify your board book collection.

‘Dark Night’ is written and illustrated by Dorothee de Monfreid. In this picture book a little boy lost in the woods is frightened from pursuing his way home by monsters and takes shelter inside a tree, where he meets someone who helps him overcome his fears to make it to his house. The novel is simple enough that it can be used to help teach a child in a simple way what settings, story and characters are.½

This book is so funny! What happens when no one can agree on doing something together? The ending is perfect. I loved the illustrations and style.

I cannot get over the little purple bear's expressions. So good. Also, a nice parable of democracy overcoming a totalitarian. :-)

I'm a happy fan of Sylviane Donnio's I'd Really Like to Eat a Child, so I was pleased to discover that the illustrator, Dorothee de Monfreid has her own book translated into English. With sparky colors and bold lines, she tells the story of a little boy in a dark forest who scares away the dangerous creatures with a little help from a friend.

Verdict: The spare, exuberant text is full of wonderful noises and children will be breathless in anticipation as the little boy escapes from the dangerous animals and makes his way home to a satisfying conclusion.

A little boy named Felix tries to walk through the woods at night, and has to find a way to get by the ferocious creatures. By French author Dorothee de Monfreid, this is a good read for kindergarten age students, that teaches them about overcoming fear through teamwork.

Everyone has fears, but the real question is how many people would actually build up the courage to face their fears? They always say when you can face your fear, you will overcome it. Sometimes it takes someone to help you along your journey of facing your fears to give you enough courage to get through it. The main character in "Dark Night" experiences facing his fear when he meets a rabbit. The rabbit helps him disguise himself that way he can actually frighten what he is scared of so he can find his way back home. This book is excellent for children to understand that friends are special and those who stick by your side to help you through the rough patches, are the ones who are true friends. Sometimes, all a person needs is a little shove from someone else to get them through something.

As Felix was wandering through the woods, he heard a wolf growl and he hid in a tree. Then a tiger came along and scred the wolf away and scared Felix even more. A crocidile came and scared the tiger and scared Felix even more. Felix was terrified and sought shelter in a rabbits house. The rabbit helped Felix get home safely by dressing up in scarry costumes so no other animals would scare them.

Felix is walking in the woods on his way home, when he begins to hear scarey noises. He hides in large hollow tree. As the story progresses, one animal scares off the next. How will Felix get home? This book has a somewhat surprising ending.

REVIEW: "Little Felix is all alone, walking home through the forest when he hears a spooky howling and spots a wolf approaching! His luck turns from bad to worse when a tiger scares away the wolf and a crocodile scares away the tiger! Can something as small as a rabbit help Felix scare away the wild things prowling the woods? This empowering picture book is perfect for any child who’s ever wanted to turn the tables on scary beasts lurking at night." www.amazon.com
