The primary purpose of this book was to acquaint the readers with the state of the marketplace for pocket calculators in the mid-1970s. Mullish first gives an overview of the history of the pocket calculator, then goes into considerable detail about the four-function calculator.

Scientific calculators were beginning to take the market by storm. Some people called them, "Electronic Slide Rule Calculators," but of course they were much more than that because of their greater precision and convenience -- and they were programmable.

Mullish analyzes and discusses the most advanced models (HB-45, SR-51, SR-52, HP-25, HP-55, HP-65, HP-70, and HP-80) and explains the difference between the Hewlett-Packard models, with their "Reverse Polish Notation," and all of the other manufacturers who followed the practices of conventional algebraic notation.

Mullish provides practical help by illustrating problem-solving techniques using the advanced features for doing calculator mathematics.

The book ends with a lengthy comparison chart of features available on more than 200 pocket calculator models.

Much of the content of this book is apropos to the next generation of scientific calculators. Chiefly, there have been advances in display technology with the change from LED to LCD, the latter enabling graphics displays and longer battery life.
