In this February 1951 bound collection of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, the early "Peanuts" strips are here. The Feb. 11 issue has an ad for tickets to Margaret Truman's singing appearance with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Feb. 12 has a story about the Shah of Iran (yes, that one) marrying a 19-year old beauty. Feb. 15 has a story about Sugar Ray Robinson winning the Middleweight belt from Jake La Motta. Feb. 19 has a story about new OSU football coach, Woody Hayes. Feb. 28 has a piece about a "proposed school for negroes".… (meer)

This collection features a nice "Rip Kirby" from 1953 by Alex Raymond (although several of the pages are arranged in reverse order in this strip), a decent "Mandrake the Magician" from 1938 by Lee Falk (with Alex Raymond art, I think), and a mediocre "Johnny Hazard" from 1955 by Frank Robbins.

This was my first stint on the staff of my college literary magazine. It did print three of my poems (one mediocre, two I still like quite a bit, notwithstanding the typos). My closest friend at the time, Larry Nolte, had several drawings selected (I've always liked his work, even if he himself can be hard to take). I thought the best work here belonged to another friend on staff, Willy Wood. One of his poems contained a line I'd love to use for a book someday: "What is a man, / something unbroken?". I may be biased, but I really felt we did a lot to improve the caliber of the magazine, and I felt it suffered after we left.… (meer)
