This collection of Murrow's broadcasts, interviews and speeches resonates not only with the power of history but with a relevance that can shock some 60 years later. The topics of importance to Murrow -- individual freedom to think and act, the importance of education, the responsibilities as well as the privileges of living in as a US citizen, the terror of war, the power and danger of mass communication, and the needs of humanity -- have as much power now as when he originally wrote and spoke. This book should really be required reading along side Thoreau and similar thinkers.

"This I Believe" was a radio program for inviting people from all walks and places to share their spiritual beliefs. Its main objective was to enable common ground to emerge. [vii] It did.

I read this while on holiday in London just blocks away from the BBC and Murrow's flat on Great Portland. Reading broadcasts that are of-the-moment, not revised or reconsidered in hindsight makes for great reading and understanding of history.½
