A group of Jewish Holocaust survivors return to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps in Poland to confront their lost childhood. They had been transported to the death camps from the ghetto-concentration camp Terezin, also known as Theresienstadt, in Czechoslovakia.

Fifty years have passed since they were among the eighty-nine boys uncharacteristically spared during a selection by the so-called “Angel of Death,” Dr. Joseph Mengele. The mystery of their survival has never been solved.

The boys, in their early teens, had served as slave laborers, learning the inner workings of the Birkenau killing facility. They even knew the night their loved ones were sent to the gas chamber and crematorium. Now in their 60s, the men recount their experiences in the camps, their survival tactics and coping mechanisms, and the emotional scars they still carry.

The 1995 hour special was aired on WIVB-TV and received two New York Emmy Awards for Historical Programming and Documentary Photography. It is written and reported by veteran TV journalist Rich Newberg and photographed and edited by WIVB-TV Chief Photographer Mike Mombrea Jr. Both co-produced the program.

The documentary has been nationally distributed as a teaching aid for Holocaust studies and has become part of the permanent collections of several museums and media centers, including Yad Vashem in Israel. (fonte: Imdb)
