This short story, about a Nigerian detective heading back to work a case in his home village, is intended to be an introduction towards a story series featuring the detective Ikenna Koldilinye.

I appreciated the premise of the story, a detective having to face his past, but the treatment the concept got in this short story just didn't draw me in as much as I wanted it to. Some of the explanation of the political turmoil, while it makes sense to explain to the reader, just felt as if it dragged on a bit, with one section of text seeming to repeat itself pages after it first appeared. For a 28-page story, that didn't seem right.

I am sure that once the author gets a chance to expand the story into a full-length work, it will be a more cohesive story. The right elements are all there, it just feels that for such a short story for this character, the writing was holding back on depth.… (meer)
