4037 George Wallace Jones, by John Carl Parish (read 18 June 2005) In April I read an old biography of one of the first two US Senators from Iowa, and this is a book on the other first Senator from Iowa. Jones was born on 12 April 1804, elected Senator Dec 7, 1848, and reelected Dec. 21, 1852, and died in Dubuque on 22 July 1896. It is an odd book, since most of it is drawn from an account Jones drew up. It is full of interest--including an account of the Graves-Cilley duel in 1838 in which Jones served as second to Representative Cilley of Maine who was killed in the duel by Representative Graves of Kentucky. Jones likes to tell of all the famous people he knew and of how effective he was in getting them to do things he wanted them to do. It was great fun reading this odd book, and it is too bad Jones is not better known.… (meer)
