Classic Church Potluck Recipes is a 2022 Gooseberry Patch publication.

I checked this book out of the library on a whim -thinking I might find some older recipes I remembered from the church potlucks I enjoyed as a child- or maybe some dishes my grandmother used to cook.

This cookbook- or compilation of recipes reminds me of the cookbooks I have purchased- or inherited- over the years as part of a church fundraiser. The concept is a simple one: The church members who wish to participate each donate a recipe- in the usual categories- soups, breads, salads, main dishes, desserts, etc. Volunteers organize the cookbook and raise money for teen activities or other equipment the church needs.

These recipe books rarely include photos as the recipes are collected from many different individuals and is not professionally published for sale in bookstores or online. This cookbook is exactly like that. It’s a compilation of recipes donated by different people, from different locations in the United States and Canada.

These recipes are old school- or classic- as the title says- no gluten free- sugar free- fat free recipes- or the mention of the various ways we cook now- microwaves, air fryers, pressure cookers, and all that. Be aware of the ingredients- which might not be a great fit for watching their calories or fat intake….

But…

These recipes scream comfort food, and pleasant feelings of nostalgia, too They are perfect for church potlucks- but also for picnics and family reunions- or smaller gatherings- for clubs or other types of meetings. The ingredients are simple, easy to find, budget conscious, and the recipes are not complicated.

Overall, a nice comforting cookbook that brings back memories. That said, many of the recipes still show up at big family and church gatherings. It would be very easy to substitute ingredients for a healthier version in most cases. Some of my favorite recipes come from the church cookbooks I’ve collected or inherited over the years. They aren’t gourmet with slick color photos- but they are dishes that bring back some of my fondest memories.

One of my favorite cookbooks! I love the mix of beginner to experienced recipes. This mix makes it easy to share with my grandchildren who are just learning cooking skills.

An average collection of mostly dips with a few fondues thrown in. A couple of the dips probably lend themselves better to crostini or another small bread, but they are very much dip-like in texture. Some are savory; some are sweet. My recipe box already includes most of the ones I'd be likely to use.

Louise Hurm gave this to me and I actually find the hints much more helpful than the recipes. As with all cookbooks, many of the recipes just don't fit my household, but the ones I've tried are good.

I have nothing against "pre-made food assembly" but this cookbook relies too heavily on unhealthy pre-made foods with tons of additives... such as store-bought pre-made cocoa mix, pre-made fake creamer powders, etc. (I thought I would be making my own healthy cocoa mix!?)
I expected basic (and cleaner) ingredients. I would not use or recommend most of the recipes.½

Too many of these recipes are similar. Some use ingredients like cream of mushroom soup I would never use in macaroni and cheese. While someone who seeks a recipe for this dish may find one, to me macaroni and cheese is a comfort food. As a comfort food, I want my tried and true recipe so it brings true comfort.

The soul-satisfying pleasure that we receive from our favorite foods is immediate, indelible, and infinitely soothing. Family favorites that are associated with happy memories, holidays, and home are a cherished part of all of our lives. We pass these recipes down to generation after generation and share them with our closest friends. “America’s Comfort Foods”, from Gooseberry Patch, is filled with wonderful dishes and delightful side-notes. As you turn the pages, you will meet people from all over the United States, and you’ll get to know what they cook and why they like what they like the most. Over 200 recipes are featured, including: “New Neighbor Coffee Cake”; “Wendy’s Bacon-Onion Swiss Quiche”; “Momma’s Idaho Potato Soup”; “Corn & Onion Casserole”; “Scalloped Tomatoes”; “Fried Taters & Squash”; “Red Cabbage & Apples”; “Mom’s Farm Favorite Casserole”; “Snowy River Roast Chicken”; “Blackberry Jam Cake with Caramel Icing”; “Texas Toffee Pecan Bars”; “Maine Blueberry Pie”; and “Buckeye Candies”. Another reason why I love this book? MY OWN MOTHER’S RECIPE FOR “MAMA’S SUMMER SALAD” IS ON PAGE 91.

I have to say, this book is pretty disappointing. It's got nice photography, and a few interesting flavor combinations, but I was really disappointed that several of the recipes feature cake/brownie mix as the first ingredient. It might be an okay book for young kids who want to create something on the easier side, but it's definitely not for people who have more advanced baking skills.

One of the only recipes that looked interesting to me was the recipe for Brown Sugar Apple Cookies.

Vickie and JoAnn have created another marvelous Gooseberry Patch cookbook!

If you have never taken the time to look at a Gooseberry Patch cookbook, this is the one for you. Recipes such as Reuben Appetizers, Chicken-Salsa Dip and Hidden Pear Salad are all created with five ingredients or less. You will be amazed that they can be created in such a short time. The pictures are great and the recipes are very easy to follow. Enjoy!

As always, this Gooseberry Patch book has "usable" recipes (that is, don't have to mailorder or drive to specialty shops in order to make) and the most delicious blondies ever. Was free for kindle, nook, ibooks, etc. today at least (May 30, 2012).

While I generally like Gooseberry Patch books, cookbooks and web recipes, this one published my cherry tomato meatball recipe (as in little cherry tomatoes that can overwhelm the garden late summer--not any fruit) so received this hardcover free. The recipes tend to be realistic for what you'd have at home on hand or local farmer's market or your own garden.

Homey little cookbook with family favorite type recipes for the holidays. Adorable sketches accompany holiday sayings and seasonal décor ideas sprinkled throughout the recipe sections.

"Small cheer and great welcome makes a merry feast.” - William Shakespeare
"A wooden bowl filled with pomegranates, lady apples and juniper makes a welcoming country centerpiece.”

Recipe contents are: Farmhouse Breakfasts; Home-Style Beginnings; Fireside Soups & Breads; Cozy Kitchen Suppers; Homemade Desserts. But probably a third of the book is left to chapters that I didn’t buy the book for: Holiday Trimmings (things like handmade gift tags, balsam draft stoppers); Christmas Past (memories from the authors and their friends); Holiday Magic for Kids (things like stained glass candies, paper snowflakes); Homespun Handiworks (ideas, how-to’s and patterns).

I guess I’ve gotten spoiled with cookbooks that have glossy photos of every recipe. This book has none. Even with the lack of pictures and the extra “stuff” padding the book, because I do like to try family favorite recipes, I’m sure I’ll be making more from this book.
