What did the landscape of the Land of Israel look like during the
biblical period? And what do the landscapes of the Bible look like
today?

The oak and the olive, the roe deer and the rabbit, the eagle and
the deer are not abstract concepts. They are an integral part of the
landscape of the Land of Israel – then and now.

For me the Land of the Bible focuses on all these and other
landscape and natural phenomena mentioned in the Bible.

The book was written following tours, surveys and research which
the author conducted over fifty years.
The book tries to decipher, among other things, what is the biblical
lily? What is the meaning of the miracle of an oasis in the desert?
What is a forest in the Bible? And what is the difference between
an “eagle” and an “eagle”? In addition, it refers to expressions
unique to the Land of Israel and the Hebrew language, such as
“The Land of the Deer”, “Chafikim in the Negev”, “Yelat Chen” or
“Derech – The eagle in the sky”.

Dr Uzi Paz is a biologist specialising in ornithology and one of the first conservationists in Israel. Born 1935.

Basics: 1987, hardcover, 264 pages, 60 color photos, 470+ species discussed, no range maps

The format of this book is a reading reference to cover all birds found within Israel along with a small sample of good photographs. Depending on the status of the bird in the country, each species is given 1/4 to a full page of text. Most birds are discussed by several topics which include description, habit and distribution, behavior, and nesting.

The information provided by the author is thorough and reflects a great familiarity of the bird’s natural history due to his own research and experience.

Although the book is mostly a reference, it does contain color photos of 60 of Israel’s 500+ species. These photographs are all of good quality in both size and pose. They represent a smattering of bird families from herons to ducks to shorebirds, raptors, pipits, and ravens.

This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in the birds of the Middle East and to those with a special interest in understanding more about each of the birds found in Israel. It’s a good reference to have on your shelf.

Basics: 2004, softcover, 48 pages, 60 color photos of 60 species, no range maps

The brief book is an introductory sampling of 60 of the 500+ birds that can be found in Israel. The focus of the book is to offer the reader a general background on the birds and their natural history. The text discusses migration, feeding behavior, historical accounts, distribution, and habits. This information is general in nature.

Most of the pictures are of good quality and all are in color. The photos capture the birds in a variety of situations, such as in flight, at the nest, wading, or singing.

A sample of birds is offered in each of the five chapters, which represent resident birds, summer visitors, wintering birds, migrants, and vagrants.

This book will be appreciated by the general naturalist or the casual birder who may want to get a brief introduction to some of Israel’s birds.
