Managing Millie by Susan Pope Sloan is a Christian Historical Romance. Including characters I met in earlier books in the “Rescued Hearts of the Civil War Book”, this third book kept my interest. Telling the story of Millie and Troy, we dive into the lives of these two characters.

With events that have lasting consequences, the pair struggle to deal with life during a period of war. I love how the author develops the characters as well as the storyline throughout all of the books.

While you could read this book on its own, I definitely recommend reading the books in order. Doing so will allow you to get to know the characters and the events that shape the story.

I liked how the author depicts the struggles people faced, the various ways they overcame them, and how they were able to assist and encourage one another. I enjoyed reading about Millie's friendship with her aunt. When the mill workers left the Georgia Mills, I was relieved to see them united. It was interesting to learn about the refugee camps in the South that the Union Army gathered and shipped women and children to.

Troy refused to use a weapon and was unwilling to fight for either side of the war. This implied that he had to run all the time to escape being discovered. Troy and Millie have known one another since they were young. Their relationship has gone through many ups and downs, and they have had to deal with challenging situations.

Given that I reside in Georgia, learning about the events in various regions of the state was fascinating. This book, which is volume three of the Rescued Hearts of the Civil War series, can be read as a stand-alone. This is a good story if you like reading about the Civil War.

I love a story that captures the time period so well you feel as if you are actually there. The author delivers a realistic look during the Civil War. I like that the author has a strong and determined woman that commands attention wherever she goes. Her desire to overcome obstacles is evident as her journey takes her into unknown territory. Trying to survive and worry about someone she cares deeply for occupies her mind a lot. There were times when Millie wondered if she would survive the many obstacles she faced but her faith is what she relies on.

Troy is someone who I wasn’t sure about at first. I understand why he didn’t want to fight but with that choice he had to leave the woman he loved. Troy still at times ponders over what happened the last time he saw Millie. He dreams of being reunited with her and hopes her feelings for him are the same. As war rages on, it gets harder to find where Millie was taken. Will Troy give up or keep believing that he will be reunited with Millie?

I was upset with Millie when her anger spills out onto someone who I didn’t think deserved it. Two people who gave in to temptation suddenly find themselves with a special surprise. We see where forgiveness comes in for both characters as they search their hearts.… (meer)

Managing Millie is book three in the Rescued Hearts of the Civil War series. Although I have not read the previous two books I was able to read and understand as a stand-alone. I would love to read the previous books just because it was so good and for more background stories. This is a raw and gritty story but one of hope and restoration. The Civil War Era is a sad time in our history but Ms Sloan brings it to life with finesse. The narrative shows how this war affected every member of every family and how life changing it was. Although some parts are difficult to read it is reality. I really enjoyed watching the characters grow and how they handled difficult situations with faith and family. Sometimes family isn’t blood but circumstances make them that. I highly recommend reading.
