From Kirkus: "The delightful, expressive illustrations are by turns comical and poignant, and lots of white space and minimal text on each page focuses attention on the protagonists. Occasionally, blue type is set on black backgrounds, heightening visual appeal. Kids will want to stick with this one."

Number Fun!

You’ve never had such a good time with a book as you will this one. Fun is exploding between its covers. While learning numbers and counting, rhyming animals scamper across the pages. Bunny Hun has the number one and Tabby Licks has number six, with lots of excitement in between.

The colors and illustrations bring smiles with each turn of the page in this big board book. If the reader adds different voices and sound effects to the animals, little ones will have lots of laughter. The end of the book has a big surprise when Crocodile Claire pops up with her mouth open daring everyone to count her teeth. Just make sure little fingers don’t pull them off.

I have witnessed my granddaughter have peals of giggles whenever she looks at this sturdy book, which is often, and it is well loved. This five-plus star book will be enjoyed by children through three years old. I highly recommend you get it!

Thank you, Candlewick Press, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.

This is the Color of Fun!

This isn’t an ordinary “learn your colors book,” instead, it opens a whole new world of giggles and play. Each color is represented by a different animal with names that rhyme such as Kitty Slink who is pink, and Seahorse Stu who is blue.

This sturdy board book is a bigger size, all the better for the colorful pages and cute illustrations to stand out. Grins will abound if the reader uses different voices for the animals, and sounds like hisses and he-haws.

Best of all, there is a surprise at the back. The color black is not only represented by Spider Jack, he pops up. I had first-hand experience watching my granddaughter laugh and laugh when Jack came out. Just make sure he doesn’t get close enough for little hands to reach out and grab him!

This much-loved book is well made, and sure to bring joy for a long time. I highly recommend this five-plus star book for little ones through three-years-old.

Bear tags along with Squirrel, declaring his devotion and friendship in rhyming text, until Squirrel finally, politely asks for some space. But then, of course, Squirrel misses Bear, and the two are reunited. Bear's text is in bold, Squirrels in thin/regular. Observant readers will notice the characters' reactions and the events in the story that take place only in the illustrations, not the words.½

Mabel gets to choose a pet but her choices, including a skunk, hedgehog and elephant, may not be the best for her family. Large, clear print and the flow with just the right amount of rhyming makes this story a riot to read aloud. Filled with gorgeous vocabulary words such as exotic, hullabaloo, coiled and more that readers will love repeating. Knowing she needs something furry and sweet Mabel deliberates and finally finds the perfect pet.

The illustrations are lovely but I feel like I will forget the book rather easily, despite the great message, that I try to remember everyday, especially when I feel more hopeless.

David Litchfield is one of my favourite illustrators because of the cute and luminous artworks he creates for his own and other authors' stories. This picturebook follows a girl and a fox who travel through varied landscapes, face adversity and worries, get help from friends and come through to a bright morning. A lovely message of courage and hope with beautiful, colourful and light-filled illustrations. This book also makes nice use of the endpapers, transitioning from a grey to light-filled mountainscape to match the theme and progression of the story. I love it when authors/illustrators make full use of each part of the book.

Poetic, rhythmic text flows along as the illustrations show a journey of a young girl and a fox. There is darkness, but the girl is never alone, and there is always another day - and another bright morning.

One of my favorite double page spreads is a series of four vertical panels: "Sowing and planting. Roots before shoot. Stem before flower. Leaf before fruit," where the artist shows the roots growing underground as well as shoots sprouting out of the soil.

This is a great non-fiction book that shares amazing illustrations of the wolves and their lifestyle. The book discusses about pup development, wolf relationships in the pack and a lot more illustrated facts. The ways of the Wolf is the winner of the 2018 English Association Best non-fiction picture book.

I love this good dino! You can eat vegetables and be strong strong strong! And all the other t-rexes don't stop eating meat but do have some vegetables for a change because it's still a meal if there's not brontosaurus burgers.

This lift-the-flap board book is adorable, but not as sturdy as I need a board book to be.

Each spread features a rhyming couplet, for example "Grasshoppers are often seen/playing on the grassy green./With jumps and leaps they spring along,/chirruping a merry song." The creature introduced is in bold type.

Each spread has bright, colorful illustrations and 7 flaps. The flaps lift from the top down. They are easy to find, featuring the same plant or other image. Beneath the flaps are 7 of a creature with 3 pairs and 1 odd creature. They are colorful and bright and readers are encouraged to match up the creatures. There is also a seek and find counting challenge; 5 acorns, 10 ants, etc.

The book is a 7x7 square with thin but fairly sturdy cardboard. The flaps, however, are only made of thick cardstock and since they bend down and the pages are very crowded, would be almost impossible to reinforce.

The cartoon illustrations are colorful but very busy. I prefer simpler illustrations for very young children whose eyes are still developing.

Verdict: While I wouldn't add this to a board book collection, it would make a great addition to a storytime kit or toy bag and I'm planning on adding this one to a garden kit or possibly my existing seasons kit.

As baby bear goes through his days, he finds many times when he needs a kiss to make him feel better. He is fortunate to always have someone there to give him that kiss.

The book, Kiss it Better, explores the many times throughout the day that a young child needs love and support. The author uses rhyming text combined with the illustrator’s beautiful, colorful artwork to create a story that explores feelings and helps young children understand their social/emotional world. This title would make a great storytime read aloud and a wonderful book for parents to share with their own preschoolers.

I'll never let you go is a rhyming book that is great for parents to read to their children. This is a pre-school and above level for childrens to understand how much parents love them. Super Cute!

When you love someone, you stand by them no matter what happens.

In good times . . .
When you're excited, the world joins with you,
You bounce all about--look, I'm bouncing, too!

In bad times . . .
When you are sad and troubled with fears,
I hold you close and dry all your tears.

And all the times in between.
When you are high and when you are low,
I'll be holding your hand . . . and I'll never let go.

Share this beautiful celebration of unconditional love with someone special in your life.
