This is an entertaining and enlightening account of a dream, and how hard work and good timing can make that dream come true. The author and his family ditch their urban life and start a human-powered organic farm in the country near Toronto. After a few years of hard work they succeed in becoming a farm that supplies elite chefs and other foodie clients. But they also find ways to give back, becoming an integral part of a system that provides good quality food to low income people. It truly is a dream story. It is also a manifesto. The last chapter and the epilogue are written almost as a challenge, asking the reader if I am part of the problem or part of the solution. Probably I am some of both, since I still eat meat, I can’t always afford to buy organic produce from local farmers. But I do cook my own food at home most of the time, which I guess is actually less common than it should be. I do think about food and the relationship humans have with it, and the relationship we both have with the planet. I suppose that’s the first step.… (meer)
