I was drawn to the book by the author's name "Ramondetta." I happen to be related to some in Sicily with that last name, so it is a fluke that the book came into my hands. With the turning of the first page I was hooked. This is the account of a relationship, professional and personal, between a woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer and one of her team of physicians, a doctor of gynecological oncology. Taking turns writing, each in her own voice, the authors shared their thoughts and emotions to the patient's struggle to battle this cancer and to fight for life. At times it was not an easy read. The account asks you to go down paths that you might want to turn a blind eye to. But the honesty of the writing tells you this is authentic and the words are actually a gift. They are given to the reader freely with no holds barred and say things that most people will not be honest enough nor open enough to say out loud. And because of the honesty, it is believable.
We all know that there is no U turn on this road of life. Yet, there is no one who has made the complete journey and been able to tell us about the ending. The authors ask themselves the same questions that each one of us asks ourselves in the privacy of our hearts and shares their efforts to find answers and come to peace with the search. Though there are no final answers, I am more at peace with having read of their journey.
