Judith A. Ranta

Ranta does a masterful job ferreting out Chamberlain's biography from her writings for the Lowell Offering. It is difficult. Betsey was married four times, often reverting to the Chamberlain name. She was of mixed race, possibly Abenki Indian and white. Ranta believes this is why she disappeared from many records that would substantiate her genealogy. By using her sleuthing abilities Ranta was able to fill out much of her life from her writings. Unfortunately the writings stopped when her employment at Lowell ended so her later life was established from court records.
The bulk of the book was 34 of 37 of her writings.… (meer)
