Rae Giana Rashad

Follows the fates of two enslaved girls, one from the 19th century, and one from the 21st. Offers a disconcerting speculation on a very different outcome of the civil rights movement of the 1960s which is horrific and believable. Imaginatively incorporates many current concerns and conflicts, but remains character driven. Reminded me of Margaret Atwood’s work, and the author does mention her in the afterword. Pairs well with Grace Elizabeth Hale’s In the Pines.
