Being from Southern Louisiana I keep the Acadians very close to my heart. They are a large part of my heritage. In a time when the whole world screams out for restitution and apology of some sort the Acadians are mostly overlooked by society and not many realize just how badly they were treated. This is a thoughtful volume their history and how the powers that be (England and France) were a determining factor in their placement and how they overcame many obstacles to thrive and survive a world that repeatedly sought to push them away.… (meer)

The story begins with a hurricane and strong winds, and a little crawfish with one arm. He is alone and afraid until a turtle named Hopewell rescues him. Hopewell affectionately names him L'il Red and they become very close friends. Together they see the destruction, and it breaks their hearts. Hopewell is blind, but he still protects L'il Red. Throughout the story we hear Creole dialect, and we meet frogs and other creatures. The story shows us a lot about resilience, determination, and love. I would definitely recommend this book. Ce livre retrace l’histoire de ce peuple formé par des pionniers venus de la France au début du 17e siècle. Il raconte l’expérience coloniale, les épreuves de la Déportation et l’exil. Il décrit l’arrivée des premiers Acadiens en Louisiane et l’évolution de leur société le long des bayous. Inspired by an earlier volume published in New Brunswick dealing with the history of the Acadian community there, this work shares the same history as the Acadians of the Canadian maritimes up to the Deportation of 1755. At that point, Histoire des Acadiennes et Acadians de la Louisisane follows the route of exile that brought the Acadians to Louisiana. It studies the evolution of the Acadian community in Louisiana and furnishes a portrait of contemporary Acadian/Cajun culture through its social traditions and artistic expression. Although intended for French immersion students in Louisiana studies (8th grade), this book is a comprehensive overview of Acadian/Cajun history and culture.
