Nathan Ripperger

When I talked to friends as our children were growing up we would say, "you should write a book." That is what Nathan Ripperger has done. This is a quick read filled with statements that he said to his children as they were growing up. Things like "We do not warm up grilled cheese in the VCR" brought back memories and a smile to my face. It is quite funny when we think of things said to children during a specific situation that would make absolutely no sense any other time. People without children will probably not understand this book, but it is a cute concept. Many of the statements are definitely had to be there ones as I puzzled over some, but laughed out loud at others. The illustrations work with this book, but are not wonderful. I was hoping for some of those universal sayings that have been passed down over the generations, perhaps in the next book.

Now I am a mom of three under three, so I have said a ton of things to my little ones that I know I probably never expected to say. So when I requested this book I was sure I'd find a ton of hilarious things we have said to our children but unfortunately it wasn't what I was expecting. Some were funny others weren't. The illustrations were really good and I'd love to have had a physical copy of the book so that I could be able to really enjoy the illustrations.… (meer)

While I'm not a parent, I can still relate to many of the whimsical, hilarious, and absurd things that illustrator, Nathan Ripperger, finds himself telling his kids. I grew up in a household with a million kids and I recall many of the batshit crazy things that my mother would yell at us. Some of them are even featured in this book, "Get that dinosaur out of your mouth!" (A phrase my mother often yelled at me, even through high school, as I had a tendency to chew off the tails of my brother's dinosaurs, just because). Rippergar creates fantastic graphic illustrations to go with each phrase and some are truly a work of art that you might want framed. A cute gift, perfect for parents this Christmas.
