What a great conclusion to the Stone Creek Brides series. Although this can be read as a stand-alone I suggest you read all three to get background stories on characters and also because you won’t want to miss out on the other stories. First off the cover is as beautiful as the words contained inside. I’m so happy Nora has her own story, as I fell in love with her character when she was first introduced and her mistreatment by her aunt. She is kind and compassionate and her life at home had me in tears. It is sad how unwed mothers are treated by others but God still has a plan their lives, which includes Nora’s sister. There is so much I want to comment on but I don’t want to spoil the story line. I can say it has a mystery of who is starting fires, romance, faith, family, friends, and delicately deals with abuse. An all encompassing book that will keep you engrossed and leave you satisfied but sad that it is over. I highly recommend.

Scandals and Mercies by Kathleen Rouser is a Christian Historical Romance. Nora Armstrong was taken from her family’s farm to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle. She struggles to accept and conform to her aunt’s idea of a suitable husband and hides her sister’s shameful secret from them.

James Cooper is a report on the quest for a great story to move him forward in his career. After the local home for unwed mothers burns down, the arson investigation brings big-city reporter James Cooper back to Stone Creek—and back into Nora’s life. James’s meddling aunt raises more questions than she answers about his past.

As the story progresses, secrets are revealed, mysteries develop, and endangered mothers require protection. I loved watching the interactions between James and Nora. I also appreciated how the author turns characters who seem cold and harsh into characters you could understand.

So, if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out Scandals and Mercies by Kathleen Rouser.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Scandals and Mercies is the third book in Kathleen Rouser's Stone Creek Brides series. This is an enjoyable, easy to read Christian historical romance that is well written and easy to imagine. This story does follow after the rest in the series with similar wonderful characters, so it is best to read them in order. In this story we meet Nora and James. Both have been raised by aunts who have a secret about their younger life that affects how they view others.

I enjoyed reading of how Nora felt about her aunt and how she wasn't able to obtain her dream of being a teacher. I found it interesting the extremes James would go to be able to advance in the newspaper field. I also enjoyed catching up with the other characters that have been introduced in the earlier books in this series. I appreciate how the author touched on the sensitive topic of unwed pregnancies, abuse and neglect.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

This story is a reminder of how people judge others. It was sad to see people in town treating unwed mothers so harshly. I kept thinking of the scripture that says, “He without sin cast the first stone.” Nora is such a sweet caring young woman. She has become more like a maid at her uncle and aunt’s place. Her aunt is cruel and says such hurtful words to Nora. Nora is also keeping a secret about her sister that will soon be found out if they are not careful.

When a fire destroys the home where unwed mothers we’re staying the town seems to be divided on whether to help them or not. James is here in town working at the newspaper. He thinks the fire will be a big story and help his career. Arson is suspected but who would want to harm the women and their babies? I was disappointed in the article he published and saw a bitter heart within him.

Nora and James are attracted to each other but they do have a few obstacles to overcome. Faith is very important to Nora, yet James is not sure he believes in God. When something tragic happens to Nora’s aunt everything changes. I loved how the author illustrates how we are to care for others and forgive them. This part reminded me of my mother. We never had a good relationship but when she became very sick I knew I had to be there to care for her. Nora shows her compassion and love for her aunt even though she has been treated so badly by her.

When a dark secret is revealed to James his world seems to fall apart. Here is where I thought the author did a great job of showing how vulnerable a character was and his journey to forgive. Janes knows that he has misjudged so many but can he learn to trust God?

As I read the story I felt that old familiar feeling of rejection. Several characters experience it and it made me remember growing up knowing that my parents never loved me. Their rejection followed me into adulthood. The only way I was able to forgive them was to ask God for help. We see in the story where a few characters experienced how painful rejection is. They didn’t handle it well but God always has a way to deal with things that pull us away from our faith.

We are back in Stone Creek, Michigan in 1902. Prejudice runs deep in some people while others are ready to help put the past just where it belongs - in the past. Nora Armstrong loves the opportunity to play piano for the church, but wishes she was able to get her teaching certificate - something her Aunt Gertrude and Uncle Edmond refuse to even consider. After all, they did not send her to finishing school to be a teacher but rather to marry a wealthy man.

James Cooper is the local journalist, always ready to print the truth, even if it rubs folks the wrong way. When his Aunt Phoebe arrives in town, the earth beneath his feet is shaken - how can he ever live it down!

Nora is learning to reflect the light of Jesus into the world. Will it show James that God really does exist? An early copy of Stone Creek Brides book3 was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

Welcome to book two in the Stone Creek Brides series where I was glad to see Maggie get her own story after being a lesser character in book one. You will become immersed in 1901 Stone Creek Michigan and won’t want to leave. As a widow with a young child trying to navigate life and find the way God has planned for her, Maggie wants to open a bakery. Her plans get derailed when a widowed pharmacist and his four ornery children move to town and turn her well laid plans topsy turvy. Maggie and Thomas butt heads and the children create chaos that makes for a great story that gives you several laughs amidst the seriousness of losing your spouse and trusting God in the difficulties that follow. I love the town folk, the characters, and the way the story flows and sweeps you right into Stone Creek. A great historical tale that leaves you anticipating the next book. I highly recommend.

I enjoyed following Maggie on her journey of making a new life for herself after her husband passes away. It was interesting to read about a pharmacist during this time period. Maggie’s husband has taught her a lot about medicine while they were married. Now that he is gone she has to rely on the local pharmacist in town. There is a slight problem though when her son and his son have a fight. It is hard to swallow our pride sometimes.

Thomas has his hands full with all his kids running around out of control that not even their housekeeper can control them. He is left on his own trying to run the pharmacy, set up the soda fountain, take care of his kids when they get the measles and deal with Maggie who is upset. I liked how the author brought these two together when Thomas becomes very ill and Maggie is asked to help. It is the perfect solution since she is familiar with medicines but will they be able to get along?

There are moments in the story that reminded me of a movie with Doris Day in it. The kids try everything they can to make this strange lady leave, but she is determined to get the upper hand. All she needs to do is show them love , grace and understanding. The boys in this story were exasperating at times but Maggie knows what is really going on. They are missing their mother.

I loved the baking contest in the story and hints of a romance blossoming between two unlikely people. With faith as the front runner, this story is sure to please those who love historical fiction. The children are the highlight in this book as we see how losing a parent can affect them. They need love and encouragement as they deal with their grief.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Set in 1901 Michigan, this wonderful novel highlights what the world was like before medicine was regulated. Natural remedies were the base of many of the ‘cures’ that were circulated among the people. Doctors and pharmacists were just being introduced to various pills that could replace some of those remedies, however, their potency was sometimes in question. Unfortunately there were swindlers who rode into town with their ‘medicine show’ to entertain and sell their famous tonics to the unsuspecting public. But those tonics didn’t really kill anyone, did they?

A most enjoyable story of a pharmacist and a pharmacist’s widow who seem to be on a course to save the town - but only if they can get along long enough to do so.

Secrets and Wishes is a follow-up to Rumors and Promises and deals with making a fresh start after a spouse has died. Maggie became a widow when her husband died, leaving her to raise their son alone. Thomas's wife has died and he is trying to raise their three sons and daughter alone while trying to build the pharmaceutical business Maggie's husband left behind.

When Maggie's son and one of Thomas' sons clash, it causes friction between the two. Between illness, a beau from the past, and an epidemic, Thomas and Maggie have to learn to work together and attempt to put their hearts back together while trying to hold together their family and their town. This historical romance set in 1901 shows the challenges that arise from trying to rebuild lives and make a future. Kathleen Rouser does an excellent job of conveying historical times.

Nice romance story for the new apothecary in town and the Preacher's sister. Has some twists and turns, with brushes with dangers and illnesses. Each has been widowed and they're protecting themselves and family. Then an old beau comes to town, spicing things up a bit. Great ending, nice town.

This is a wonderful story of second chances. Rev. Ian McCormick is struggling to forgive himself for the suicide death of one of his parishioners - a young lady who was dealing with an unexpected pregnancy, through no fault of her own. Will he finally find forgiveness?

Sophia Biddle grew up as a Bidershem - a well loved daughter of the world renowned piano manufacturer. When a family friend takes advantage of her, she finds herself in a very awkward situation. Deciding it is better to leave, she takes her young daughter, Caira, and heads for the small town of Stone Creek, Michigan. In 1900, her predicament was not easily accepted and many looked on her as a loose woman. Will the small town treat her any better?

Secrets and Wishes is the second book in the Stone Creek Brides series by Kathleen Rouser. It is a nice easy to read historical fiction with touches of clean romance. This is a nice story of widower Thomas, the newly widowed pharmacist that has recently moved to town, widow Maggie and their children. When Thomas needs constant attention, the doctor and minister turn to Maggie for help. The story takes place when aspirin was new and traveling shows were roaming the country selling their medicines.
This is an enjoyable story to read. I enjoyed seeing how Maggie was so devoted to Thomas even when she really did not want to be there. She left her son in the care of others while she cared for Thomas and his children. It was also fun to see the change that came over the children toward Maggie. It was interesting to see how Thomas went about trying to get control of his unruly children and how Maggie felt about it. It was also interesting to read of the changes that took place with the pharmacy field.
This is a fun story to read that I received a complimentary copy of. This is my honest review.

Rumors and Promises by Kathleen Rouser is a Christian historical romance. Sophie Biddle and her “sister” arrive in Stone Creek, Michigan, looking for a new life after being abandoned by her family. When their paths collide with Reverend Ian McCormick, and her past threatens her future, she has to decide whether to keep running or to trust Ian and God with her heart and their lives.

With themes of forgiveness, faith, love, and more, this book kept me reading. I loved how Kathleen Rouser developed the characters in this story. I truly found myself unable to put this book down. These characters have a second chance to overcome their individual pasts and get things right together.

With several characters who have to be the story’s nemesis, I specifically enjoyed watching the somewhat quiet and meek husband of the town busybody eventually appropriately deal with her.

So, if you enjoy Christian historical romances, check out Rumors and Promises by Kathleen Rouser for yourself. I definitely recommend it.

This is book one in the Stone Creek Brides series and I found it fascinating to be transported to Stone Creek Michigan in 1900. I was saddened to meet Sophie as she has been abandoned by her family in her time of need as she navigates life trying to protect her child at all costs. I loved Reverend McCormick and his compassion and empathy for others as he deals with past mistakes that makes him doubt himself. His love for family, his church, and others makes me want to meet him. I admire the strength of Sophie as judge-mental and narrow minded people make hurtful comments and was glad she was accepted and loved by others showing sometimes family doesn’t have to be blood. It is a beautiful story of redemption, reconciliation, acceptance, and forgiveness of others and self. It was an impressive read that drew me in and left me wanting more as I loved the twists and turns that kept my attention. I recommend adding to your TBR pile and enjoying the journey.

Sophie intrigued me right away because I just knew she was keeping a huge secret. Traveling alone with a child is a big red flag for me. I kinda figured out a little about the child but I knew there was more to the story. I admired Sophie for taking a job that didn’t pay much but she worked hard and was appreciative for the people in the town who welcomed her.

The early 1900s were hard for everyone ,but as a young woman alone raising a child it was more difficult. Of course the town had their gossip group who loved to be judgmental instead of being filled with grace and reach out to her. Sophie will have to learn to trust God and remember that He loves her as trials come her way.

One of Sophie’s secrets is a sensitive subject that may trigger some readers. It has become impossible for Sophie to feel completely safe until her past is exposed and she receives God’s healing. Her self esteem at times is very low and therefore her trust is almost non existent. Perhaps the Reverend McCormick can help her.

I did like Ian right away and thought his character was humble, kind and filled with grace. He does try to get to know Sophie better, but there is a barrier that Sophie has put up. As Sophie decides to play the piano at church, she starts to let her heart open up very slowly. Ian is very encouraging and genuinely wants to help her overcome whatever is bothering her. He has such a pastor’s heart and you can feel his gentle spirit. I really liked this character and how he makes everyone feel loved and accepted.

When Gertrude made her entrance into the story, I was displeased . She is a mean spirited judgmental and unhappy woman. Why does it bother her so much that Sophie is now playing the piano at church? Her harsh words of Sophie “parading around in an evening gown at church and their questionable upbringing,” made me instantly remember how God loved even the lost or those who had sinned.

I loved how the author illustrates redemption and reminds us that we all have a past. The good news is that God forgives us and we have been set free. I loved getting to watch Sophie mature in her faith and begin to feel confident in herself.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Rumors and Promises, by Kathleen Rouser is the first book in the Stone Creek Brides Series. This is a Christian historical fiction story that focuses on, Sophie, and Reverend Ian. While Sophie is running from her attacker and father of the child she is caring for, Ian is running from letting down a young lady when she needed help.

This is a nicely written story that is easy to read. I so enjoyed the caring characters that supported Sophie and those that supported Ian’s dream for unwed expectant mothers and their children. I especially enjoyed the strength Sophie has and the determination she has for the young girl she cares for. It’s enjoyable to read of Ian and his interaction with the young girl and how quickly they form a friendship. The parts in the story that stand out to me is the different types of reactions Sophie and Ian get from members of the church. And, the misunderstanding that cause Sophie to leave her family. This is a heartwarming story to start off a new series, I look forward to reading the rest in the series. This story is a story of forgiving one’s self and contains suspense and romance.

A shipwreck leaves one survivor who cannot remember anything and the lighthouse keeper, Cal, rescues her. The young lady takes the name of the ship, Mallory.
The setting near Mackinac Island is a favorite since I once visited there. Lighthouses are very interesting to me and the descriptions brought me right into the story.
I liked the characters of Mallory, Cal and his daughter Lily. It was great to see Mallory interact with the little girl. Mallory knows almost nothing about her previous life, although she loves to draw and paint. But she does not know if she is married or has a family.
The romance was sweet but necessarily moved at a slow pace. The feeling of uncertainty was expressed very well, especially when someone from her past shows up. Mallory is confused but soon memories return.
This was a sweet, clean story with a solid faith thread that portrayed an honorable and godly hero.

This is a nice story about a woman who loses her husband and is left to support her child by herself. In this time period it was hard to find a job for a woman. Maggie does have a gift of baking and it pays off win she wins a prize in a baking contest. I love the time period and how the author makes the story come alive.

I thought it was interesting to read about the 1900s and especially about the new pharmacy in town. Maggie's husband used to be a pharmacist so she knows a lot about medicine. She clashes with the new pharmacist in town when her son and Thomas's son have a fight. It was funny that the boys were fighting over whose dad was the best pharmacist. It is hard to imagine that during this time period, aspirin and other drugs were just being introduced. Some people, like Maggie were skeptical of this new medicine practice.

Thomas sure has his hands full with a houseful of kids and a new pharmacy to open. When he becomes very ill, Maggie is thrown into caring for him. Oh my that was an adventure just having her try to be civil to him and try to control his unruly bunch of kids. Having lost his wife has been hard on all of them. The author gives us some great characters who try to outdo Maggie in the baking department and it leads to some sharp words and fun moments.

There are a few surprises and a new person in town that stirs up trouble that makes the story enjoyable. The town faces tragedy while Maggie and Thomas try to work together to overcome the crisis. The new man in town was my least favorite character because he was arrogant and pushy. does make friction between people wherever he goes and kinda thinks he is better than others. Overall a nice story from a time period where new discoveries in medicine were happening and a woman with a dream that she hopes to see happen.

3.5 Stars

While this is the second book in a series (and my first introduction to Kathleen Rouser), I didn’t feel at all like I was coming into the middle of a story. Secrets and Wishes definitely stands on its own.

To me, this book felt very episodic which, to be fair, is how the description reads. For my personal taste, the overarching conflict just wasn’t enough to really engage me in the story. I did, however, enjoy spending time with Thomas, Maggie, their children, and some of the residents of Stone Creek, Michigan as well as the information and knowledge Thomas and Maggie have about medicine and other healing remedies, adding a unique angle to the story.

Rouser takes readers to a small town and introduces them to many of the blessings and challenges of the small town in 1901. There are also the dangers that threaten their way of life (and in one case their actual lives) through the introduction of outsiders.

Kathleen Rouser writes an endearing Christian historical fiction romance from the early 1900's. This was the first book that I have read by this author. I did not realize that it was a squeal. When I read the last page of Secrets and Wishes, I had to go on Amazon and purchase Rumors and Promises. I can not wait to start it. Even though I will be reading them out of sequence, I am sure I will enjoy both. Secrets and Wishes worked fine as a stand alone book.

Her characters are so well crafted, you will find yourself caring for each of them. She has an ability to make a sitting or location come to life. I found the information and details of the apothecary from that era interesting, especially some of the herbs used. The names are familiar to me through essential oils and the uses have not changed. This time period was very hard, with epidemics of measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough. Towns were lucky to have their own doctor. When the doctor was out to deliver a baby or to a farm area, the pharmacist would be called on for advise, dispensing medicine, or sometimes stitching a wound. You can tell Ms. Rouser enjoys history and has done an excellent job in her research.

I loved the heroine Maggie Galloway. Being a widow, raising her son by herself, she had to be a strong woman and she was. At first, I had a hard time with Thomas Harper, he seemed weak and a complainer at first. Thomas too had lost his spouse, but he was raising four children and trying to run the apothecary by himself. Even though Thomas and Maggie did not see eye to eye on many things, they found they had a lot in common after all.

I always love when an author is able to weave a faith based message in their story. I found Ms. Rousers story to be a delightful read and I would recommend it.
