Cali is starting the eighth grade with her best friend, Rivka, and is determined to fit in with the popular girls. The problem is, she and Rivka live at a motel. Fearing social suicide should anyone find out, Cali goes to great lengths to cover up her living situation. Unable to keep up financially, she finds other ways to try to get in with The Royals, as she and Rivka call them. However, these measures cause her to distance herself, not only from the tight-knit community of the Langster Motel but also from Rivka, forcing her to choose between the life she has and the life she wants.

Living at the Langster Motel is a page-turning middle grade read that stresses the importance of authenticity and loyalty over social status. I love the found family atmosphere of the motel and reliving the unncessary yet inevitable trials and tribulations of trying to fit in in middle school.
