A fascinating look at a sociopathic murderer, A Hand In The Water; The Many Lies of Albert Walker is the true story of a Canadian who, in late 1990, fled to Europe after fleecing his financial investment clients for millions. Author Bill Schiller, a journalist based in Vancouver, B.C., conducted a series of visits with Walker in prison before the trial.
Schiller does an excellent job of recreating the path that ultimately led to the conviction of the persuasive Walker. The result is a superb retelling of events.
What unfolds is a bizarre, carefully plotted life of lies and assumed names that lasted six years. Walker and his teenage daughter Sheena lived as man and wife, apparently conceived two children, and moved frequently, living in high style the whole time. He might have gotten away with the murder of an innocent man, one of many he had deceived, except for a chance mistake of an investigator showing up at the wrong door.
A Hand In The Water is meticulously researched, resulting in a solid story.

I found this book extremely interesting because I remember Albert Walker's story from the T.V. show "America's Most Wanted". Albert Walker was a con man who went to extrordinay measures (including a murder) to cover up his financial frauds. AMW originally did a spot about him because his wife desperately wanted to find the daughter that he had taken with him when he disappeared. I found this story interesting at the time, so when he was finally arrested (and again featured on AMW - this time as a fugitive caught) I was again interested. A quick reference during that TV spot stated that when Albert was arrested he and his pregnant daugher were living as husband and wife...

This is a facinating true story, and it is definately worth checking out!
