Auch in der heutigen Zeit gibt es noch vieles, das man nicht weiss oder das noch nicht erforscht wurde. Das sind zum Teil auch einfache Sachen, über die man staunen kann. In diesem kleinen Buch werden ein paar Beispiele dieses Unwissens vorgestellt und genauer erläutert. So unternimmt man beim Lesen einen genüsslichen Streifzug durch die Welt des Unwissens und lernt dabei auch einiges. Die einzelnen Themen sind dabei nur wenige Seiten lang, so dass man dieses Buch auch gut zwischendurch, z. B. im Zug bei kürzeren Fahrten, häppchenweise lesen kann.

The basic idea was thrilling and the introduction promising. I was also happy to see such a versatile selection of topics from various branches of science. Also, glancing through the bibliography, it was satisfying to see actual scientific publications there, not just "second hand science". But although the introduction asked to forgive the over-simplifications and unclarities, they bothered me - and although it was "a dictionary" I was hoping a little more specific titles than eg. "Life" since that chapter didn't wonder about all aspects of its subject. The thing that bothered me even more, was the humour, which didn't seem to come naturally and only made me feel sorry for the writers.

And, as a scientist myself, I think the writers could have picked ANY subject, because there's always some scientist who doesn't accept the ruling theory. Hey, they could have picked even evolution and find one creatonist scientist who didn't believe in it. Or climate change, to be on the ball. (Especially I was irritated by the chapter on the formation of Hawaii Islands, which was closest to my own field.)… (meer)
