Dry and way to many words. It's a very thick reference. The type font is far too small and is inconsistent throughout the book. It was not a compelling read, but I give it 3 stars because it has a lot of good information in it. It's just painful to read.

This book gives practical advice to middle school students regarding organization of a study space, planning for long-term school assignments, and other study skills.

While this book is older and therefore a bit dated at times (e.g., references to PDA devices and an inspirational quote from Bill Cosby), the majority of its advice is still quite relevant. Being a good student hasn't changed terribly much because it's still about being clear in understanding what a teacher's expectations are and finding a path to meeting those goals. To that end, this book presents a variety of steps to take, from writing good notes to studying with a group of serious-minded students. Backmatter includes reproducibles of checklists, charts, book report guides, etc.

The only minor quibbles I have are in the section about reading. At one point the author describes the difference between fiction and nonfiction, which she does well until she writes "Even biographies -- narratives about real people -- can be fictional, if they include made-up stories about their subjects' lives." Biographies are nonfiction; what she's describing is essentially historical fiction. Saying that biographies can be fictional is a misleading statement.

In the same section, she also talks about reading for fun versus reading for school. While talking about reading for fun, she includes a long list of ways to engage with a text. Some of these are fine, such as thinking deeper about the characters and how they might react in certain situations. But then there are some like this one: "Make up three essay questions and answers that would be good for the end-of-the-book test." That's no longer reading for fun; that's an assignment. Please don't squash children's love of reading by making it a chore.

Overall though, this book could help out middle school students who need a little boost to get them organized about school, homework, and studying.
