Kimono-hime volume 3 has more kimono on models than volume 2, yet somehow it seems less substantial to me. In absence of stacked outfits the pages are filled with a photo essay about dying, some manga about kimono, and what seems like an awful lot of pictures of vintage fabric patterns. Again, I have a really hard time recommending this to someone to buy who wants to see coordinated outfits.

The main weakness of this volume is that very few outfits are shown on models. Two ways to wear two different kimono on models are shown at the beginning and then for most of the magazine outfits are just sort of stacked together, obi on kimono, haori to the side (usually 4 to a page). The very end has the "hime" (princess) part, a sort of high concept fashion take on furisode. I don't want to knock it for those who are into very punk looks for kitsuke, but it's not something personally I feel like I can pull off. The main portion of the coordinates (the stacked ones) are fine, just sort of uninspired. You sort of get the feeling every obi was bought for that one outfit. It's not the kind of magazine that shows you how to work a piece into different outfits, so I can't really recommend it to someone who wants to do casual kitsuke, but if you want to put together a single funky vintage outfit this may be the magazine for you.… (meer)

Just out in November 2005... I'm curious, all right, but given the dramatically reduced kimono content of issue #5, I'm scared to spend the money sight unseen. Anyone know more about this one?

Issue 1 of "Kimono Hime" (= Kimono Princess) is by far the best of the five issues published so far. It illustrates the new trend in which young women are snapping up vintage/retro kimono and wearing them in daring, flamboyant new ways. Exciting fashion to look at... and, of course, thoroughly gorgeous kimono fabrics abound!
