I won this book in a Good Reads give away. Skees interviews people from all over the world in different cultures and economic circumstances. The interviews are eye-opening. These glimpses into other lives reveal how different yet how alike we are. We learn about the passions of a dance teacher, a farmer who leads because she has access to a cell phone, a consultant who works to bring about peace in the Middle East and a entrepreneur who takes waste tomatoes and makes sauce. The interviews are intimate and the stories are inspiring. Studs Terkel would approve.

Great news! You're going to like this ghastly book a lot better than I did. It concerns itself more with the space between a navel-gazing liberal Catholic's ears and her 'spiritual quest' to escape modernity than it does with Shakers. I very quickly tired of being preached to.½

A well-written book with very descriptive language and lots of information. The author was a theologian, married with three young sons who wondered if she would want to become a Shaker if she spent an extended period of time with them. She takes the reader along on her journey of discovery.
