Bogart is fine as a screenwriter given to violent rages, but it is Grahame's performance as the woman in love with him that is the most compelling. Add in a great cast of supporting actors and this is a great investment of an hour and a half of your precious time.

A murder suspect and his alibi fall in love.

3/4 (Good)

Extremely well crafted. It's a story about an abusive relationship, but it's handled well - as suspense rather than drama. There are a lot of excuses made for the violent man, but I don't think the audience was ever intended to swallow them.

Having not seen the documentary that is meant to accompany this book, I can't say that I experienced the full extent that this book was surely meant to encompass. The photos and quotes were easy to appreciate in their quality and candidness, but when given the focus of only John Lennon (in comparison to the intertwining story of the entire Beatles group) the book comes off as more of an ode to his relationship with Yoko Ono. Sure, it defined much of his later life, and influenced his artistic career, but do we really need a whole book with the underlying message of "Yoko didn't break up the Beatles"?

Having see the VHS version first, I liked it somewhat better than the version that had been released on DVD (the VHS runs 100 minutes, whereas the DVD is 146 minutes). I am sure if I were to watch the DVD more I would probably come to prefer it, however.
Having known most of the dialogue on the VHS by heart, I was rather thrown off when I saw the DVD and was thinking to myself "What? Where did that come from?" A lot of the dialogue that had been cut for the VHS version was from the very beginning of the film, too.

In the meantime, I think I will be keeping the VHS as well until that version is released on DVD.

"I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me."

Excellent film en noir et blanc. Tendu, désabusé et merveilleusement interprété.

This lush and beautifully photographed production of Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel contains more star power than any of its predecessors or successors in the 20th century. The setting is Concord, Massachusetts, during the Civil War, and Marmee Marach (Mary Astor) is attempting to raise her four teenage daughters in a time of deprivation and with her husband away fighting the war. June Allyson (THE GLENN MILLER STORY, THE STRATTON STORY) stars as Jo, the tomboy bookworm. Margaret O'Brien plays the selfless and tragic Beth. Elizabeth Taylor, in a perfect casting choice, plays the artistic Amy, and beautiful Janet Leigh (TOUCH OF EVIL, PSYCHO) takes on the role of responsible Meg. All of these stars turn in fine performances under the experienced coaching of director Mervyn LeRoy (MADAME CURIE, WATERLOO BRIDGE).
