The story follows young Briana Mathias, the only surviving member of the Hunter Tribe. Briana has felt like an outsider for a long time, but when her precious stone (handed down to her through her family) is stolen by the vicious leader of The Empire, Briana finds herself making unlikely friends, in order to plot an attack on the thief, and subsequently finds herself belonging with new friend Caellum.
I genuinely enjoyed every moment of reading this book. Its fast-paced structure had me hooked from beginning to end, with a well executed plot that came together beautifully. There is a good deal of action and suspense to this tale, all in exactly the right places, for fantastic effect. I can say for sure that there was never a dull moment to be had.
The story is told from Briana's point of view for the most part, though in third person of-course. We are able to explore an incredible new world through her young eyes, discovering many different tribes of creatures and various lands, all described in a breathtaking way.
The key themes I identified were Loss; of both loved ones and heritage, Strength; to find courage and do what is right, Friendship; to understand those different to yourself and to accept them, and above all Hope; that little spark that always motivates you in your personal quests.
The story holds quite a sombre tone for the most part, but what really brightens it up are the main characters, Briana, Viessa, and Caellum. The friendly and at times stubborn relationship that these three share had me smiling all the way through. I found them easy to relate to and felt as if I was right there with them, experiencing their failures, triumphs, and own personal heartaches.
The story itself was very refreshing, almost akin to a fairy tale for late teens, with some dark twists held in store. It comprised a stunning world and mesmerizing characters. Briana made a great protagonist, being strong and witty, and thankfully a hero that uses her head.
In contrast, I felt that Draegan (Leader of the Empire and The Reapers) made a bit of a lack-lustre Antagonist. He may have instilled fear into all those he met in the book, but I didn't personally connect with the way the characters all felt about him.
Overall, I found The Paladin to be a very imaginative and well-written read, and I certainly congratulate J. M. Storin on such a fine novel. I greatly enjoyed every page, following the character's arduous journey, often wondering if Briana and Caellum would wall prey to the fearsome Reapers, or live to fight another day. With surprises at every turn, I would certainly recommend The Paladin to any fantasy lovers out there.
My rating: 4 Stars.
Truly incredible.
