Not only does Kat Su provide an interesting and humorous -- or depressing, depending on your view of the world -- array of crazy taxidermy, but she also includes step-by-step instructions for stuffing a mouse on your own. Not something I'd want to do, but a nice addition for a book on taxidermy!

Note: I received a digital galley of this book through NetGalley.

I'm not familiar with the tumblr but I like books about taxidermy and enjoyed this collection of photos. It was fun to page through and add to my taxidermy collection.

A short dead-tree-version-of-a-tumblr that makes for a great coffee table book. I'm more familiar with the @CrapTaxidermy twitter (which has their own book, [b:Much Ado about Stuffing: The Best and Worst of @CrapTaxidermy|22217302|Much Ado about Stuffing The Best and Worst of @CrapTaxidermy|Adam Cornish|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403397871s/22217302.jpg|41558057]) whereas this is based off the crappytaxidermy.com tumblr. Same theme: a mix of "bad taxidermy, weird-as-hell good taxidermy, and weird-as-hell bad taxidermy", though unlike the twitter this book & blog have sources listed for their finds.

It's funny, sure. But I was expecting more. They are just the same images I have seen over and over again online. Nothing new. I wanted a some background history for each piece. That would have been more interesting to me.

READ IN ENGLISH

Read all my reviews on http://urlphantomhive.booklikes.com

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you!

While browsing Netgalley (I know I shouldn't do that) I came across Crap Taxidermy and I was immediately sold. I'm never too fond of stuffed animals myself, but when I saw that weird fox on the cover, I just knew I had to read this.

I laughed out loud! Some of these 'creatures' (I don't have a better word for it) are really ridiculous. And some of them look like they are actually on display somewhere. (I suppose it's not on a course of How NOT to stuff animals). Some of them have stares that will haunt your dreams, while others just look a bit neglected (as in eaten by moths).

I don't think this is a book that everyone will enjoy. But if you were to put in on a table in your living room, I think you would get some interesting conversations. If you feel you could do a better job, there is a DIY guide at the end of the book. I think I'll pass on that one. I once had to dissect a mouse (and that didn't really was a success. No, I don't want to talk about it) and I think I'll leave it at that. Also check out the blog this book was based upon: http://crappytaxidermy.com/

This was such a fun, little, photo book! Full of images of taxidermy gone wrong, you can't help but laugh at most of them, and shake her head at a few. The very first image you see is of an overly excited fox that looks like he recently stepped out of a tumblr meme, followed by an equally cheerful lioness who looks happy to show you her vast martial arts movie collection. What's really great is that it doesn't focus solely on the tragic looking mounts that must have been created by either the blind or inexperienced, but also sneaks a glance into the world of weird and taxidermy art, which is something I truly love. We get cute looking mice playing poker and a mousy Clark Kent, which did creep me out a bit if only because showing the Superman S shirt would require a Clark Kent mouse to rip his flesh off.

That aside, it's all truly so amusing and such a great conversation starter, this book would make a fantastic addition to any coffee table, or as a cheap stocking stuffer for that lover of anthropomorphic memes you casually acquaint with in life.

Received via NetGalley and Ten Speed Press in exchange for an completely unbiased review.
Crap Taxidermy makes the promise of an entertaining and comedic read concerning distasteful and terribly positioned taxidermist “art”. The author starts off by explaining that taxidermy can come in two speeds: well done, and crap – you can guess which the book focuses on. Regardless of the author’s note that the book does not mean to be disrespectful, but rather shine a humorous light on the strange and unique works. The author includes quite a few photos: all of which are high-definition and full color.

Although I may have giggled a few times, the book overall only ensured my dislike of taxidermy practices. The author includes a segment at the very end to aid the reader in developing their own taxidermist skills. I wish I hadn’t read that segment, or really picked up this book. I’ve always thought that becoming worm food is the worst thing that could happen to my body after I die – but I’ve discovered that if I were to fall into a taxidermist’s hands the fate would be much worse.

I’ll admit that this subject is not meant for the faint of heart, and my own sense of humour is rather far from the base that the author is developing on. If you have a morbid sense of humour, or are not a “bleeding heart”, this will probably fascinate you as a quick read. It’s also highly educational on what taxidermy is, what skills are required for the profession and a crude description of “home taxidermy” with general household tools. If you have the stomach, it’s worth the read: but if you’ve got issues with death and corpse mutilation this may not be for you.

Fun with furry things
One thing Tumblr is good for is gathering people of similar proclivities. In this case, lovers of bad taste taxidermy. Kat Su has made herself into a central repository of photos demonstrating the low end of a bad hobby. Her book represents a printed version of an online blog to which aficionados have gleefully emailed contributions. The result is a small coffee table book almost guaranteed to offend animal lovers, museum goers, hunters, and most of all, taxidermists.
Enjoy.
