Although little here is as new as he believes, he offers a competent overview of some of the major research directions. The later parts of the book are poorly focused; the reader has to work to recall how the discussions of religion and polygyny relate to his subject (the latter reasonably well, the former, barely at all). Still, the discussions themselves, even when disjointed, are interesting, not least because he illustrates the points with lesser known Chinese examples, rather than reworking some of the usual episodes well-known from our own society.… (meer)
