David E. Swift

Joseph Gurney was a Quaker minister who in the late 18th centuries. He sought a creative middle way between the Quakerism of the Inner Light and the evangelical path.

I heard about this book from Sean Lucas and his syllabus for the "American Presbyterianism" system-wide course at Reformed Theological Seminary. This is a fine historical study of a subject not often written about or discussed— black Presbyterianism. When combined with selections from Grimke and Anderson, it makes a good introduction to an important chapter of United States religious history.
