The Taste of Home series relies on recipes provided by home cooks around the USA. As such, it is an interesting assortment of old standards and some odd, regional recipes. I have tried a couple dozen recipes from this book and they all work. There is an extensive variety of recipes in each category. Recipes are logically divided up by type like cookies, cakes, breads etc. There is a chapter on holiday bakes. There are troubleshooting tips and instructional sections throughout the book.

Recipes are okay though if you've read any other Taste of Home cookbooks, it seems like many of the recipes are repeats. Ignore the planning. The recipes are decent at least.

Found a couple of recipes to try. Don't care that they're copycats but rather because they sound good.

My picky eater, food-allergic kid looked through all of these recipes and actually wrote me out a notecard with 17 pages marked for dishes to try. 'Nough said...

I bought this older (1998) cookbook for a dollar at a Friends of the Mukilteo Library book sale and the purchase was one of the best dollars I spent in a long time. The wide assortment of recipes practically guarantee that all readers will find something they want to make. Many of the recipes are impractical for small families. They call for massive amounts of ingredients measured in cans and pounds and yield 10 servings. There are a few that are suitable for empty-nesters like my wife and myself, and others can be reduced to a manageable size.

The book is organized into 18 chapters that are a mixture of food (e.g., appetizers and beverages, breads, salads and salad dressings, soups and sandwiches) and primary ingredient (e.g., beef, pork, eggs, vegetables). Additional chapters cover kitchen basics and menu planning. Most of the sections include tables that summarize cooking times and other considerations.

I try to list the recipes I want to try in the front of every cookbook I own, and in this instance the list is 55 items long.

With a smart plan, easy tracking worksheets, a free foods chart, and a smart snack list, this easy to live with approach to dieting is certain to appeal to readers who are looking for some realistic suggestions for losing weight. Follow the tips for balancing diets, consult the portion control chart, learn how to lighten up favorite recipes, and get hints for avoiding the pitfalls of eating out. Then look at some ideas for exercising.

And then there are the recipes . . . try a garden frittata or a fruit-filled puff pancake for breakfast; have some zippy corn chowder or a seafood salad pita for lunch; enjoy a beef-vegetable stir fry or slow-cooked sweet ‘n’ sour pork for dinner.

Easy-to-follow recipes and common sense make this one of the best cookbooks for readers hoping to lose some weight.

Highly recommended.

A nice looseleaf binder style cookbook. Photos for every recipe. Most recipes are quite doable fir the average cook. I've cooked a few things from here.

So. Many. Good. Recipes.

...it's going to take forever to write out all the recipes I want to keep. I may need my own copy of this cookbook!

I found this in the free bin at 2nd and Charles last year and I finally made something from it - Stir-fried Walnut Chicken. It was very good! There's other recipes in here I want to try, too.

Baked Southern Grits
Zesty Hamburger Soup
Sausage Lentil Soup
Steamed Kale
Texas Barley Salad

I'm not much for artificial sweeteners so not really thinking of diet soda as a "free food" as the intro said. Also, why are tomatoes and pickles unlimited free food but salsa is limited to 1/4 cup per day? (Seriously, why even bother?) and why limit relish?

Anyway, there's a 6 week diet plan in here. Sounds good, but how can I get up every morning and fix eggs or pancakes or frittatas or enchiladas then go to work? And make all those lunches at home to eat at work like pizza, salmon, and stew? Then come home from work and make all those home cooked meals? I decided that's the rich housewife diet. I'm sticking to cereal and Lean Cuisine.

Some good stuff in here, though not a health food recipe book.

My boss gave me a gift cert for Barnes and Noble one Christmas and this is the book that I bought. It's not bad, but I don't use it to the extent that I thought I would.

I tried the recipe for Salsa Fish with mozzarella cheese. We decided salsa did not go with fish but we were amazed at how good the cheese was on the fish. I've since fixed baked fish with mozzarella cheese many times since then. The Cauliflower Tomato medley was pretty good, along with the Garlic Oregano Zucchini.

The recipes are simple. Nothing gourmet here, nothing too exciting. Just basic food.

This is a pretty good cookbook, and I think it's very informative about the different types of appliances, but I can find most (if not all) of these recipes online.

My sister bought me this book about 5 years ago for my birthday. I decided I should read it all the way through.

It's got a lot of excellent recipes. I love that it's sectioned off into type of baking item. At the beginning of each section, there are tips on how to deal with issues for each kind of item that you're making.

This has pictures that accompany almost every recipe, and small anecdotes from the people who submitted them.

I also love that this is in a binder, so I could easily remove a recipe if I wanted to use it rather than lugging the whole book to the kitchen. I made a list of recipes I really want to try as I was going through this so I see some baking in my immediate future.

If I had to name one invaluable kitchen appliance it would have to be the Slow Cooker. There is nothing more convenient than being able to assemble ingredients into a pot and then being able to just leave it to cook a tasty meal, all by itself, before the end of the day.

Whether you are new to using a Slow Cooker, or a veteran, the Taste Of Home Slow CookerTaste Of Home Slow Cooker - Review, 278 All New Family Faves, will soon become the go-to cookbook for you. It is one of those encyclopedia-like cookbooks which gives you everything you need to know in an easy to follow format.

The first thing you notice when you open the book is that each of the covers, front and back, has an extra flap which you can use to mark your place in the book. Little touches like this really come in handy when you want to save your spot to find the recipe you want to work on next.

The beginning of the book starts with an information page on Buying & Maintaining your Slow Cooker. This will help you not only choose the right size pot for your household but discusses shape, settings, inserts and also the all-important How To Clean your Slow Cooker. One excellent tip included is the Slow Cooker Temperature Check instruction. This lets you know how to check the cooking temperature of your cooker. Newer cookers will likely reach hotter temperatures faster than older ones so you will want to check every so often.

The next small section is Preparing Foods For The Slow Cooker and describes how to prepare various foods like beans, dairy, rice, fish, etc. A brief explanation of converting recipes from traditional is also included. I found the Top 10 Tips for Slow Cooking to be especially helpful. The most important one (I think) is the Don’t Peak which is one everyone breaks once in a while. A brief explanation of converting recipes to the slow cooker is included as well.

After these brief instructional pages, you are thrown directly into the recipes. Recipe chapters include:

Snacks & Beverages
Breakfast & Brunch
Soups, Stews & Chili
Beefy Entrees
Poultry Meals
Pork, Ham & More
Side Dishes
Slow-Cooked Sweets
Bonus: Instant Pot

A lot of slow cooker recipes are very short because there is so very little instruction required. When all you’re doing is pouring a whole bunch of ingredients into the slow cooker and turning it on it doesn’t take up a lot of room in the recipe book. Therefore many of the pages have more than one recipe.

Throughout the book, you will occasionally see an icon saying Fast Fix. This indicates a recipe that is either 10 minutes or less of prep time or has five ingredients or less (not including water, salt and pepper, oil, and optional extras). These recipes are the ones that make the most of your time and budget.

Each recipe comes complete with a brief description and the name of the person who contributed the recipe. Prep Time, Cook Time, and “Makes” (either quantity or servings) are listed for each recipe. For those recipes which require more than just “dump in the pot and go” directions, the instructions are very easy to follow and clearly explained.

Throughout the book are sprinkled full-color photos of many of the recipes, some full-page. The fact that they added the name of the recipe to many of the photos, really is very helpful. As a very visual person, I find photographs of the recipes I’m going to make helpful.

While there are a lot of beautiful photographs in this book there is not a photo of each recipe. However, if they had put in the photo of each and every recipe, the book probably wouldn’t have come out until next year, and I doubt I will be able to lift it to put it on the kitchen counter. So no points lost for fewer than half the recipes having pictures.

Excellent Tips And Organization

Each page of recipes has a color strip along the edge of the page. The strip is a different color for each section of recipes. This allows you to look at the edge of the book and see each separate section without having to open it. I find this particularly handy when looking recipes by meal type.

You will occasionally see Test Kitchen Tips throughout the book. These are quick tips which will offer information that can help you adopt a recipe or help with other cooking info.

The Bonus: Instant Pot section offers a variety of quick meals with quick prep times but a much quicker cooking time. Ever since I picked up my Instant Pot, I have to say it is beginning to rival my slow cooker. I use it’s slow cooker function or can use pressure cooking which will speed up cooking time. Pressure cooking takes what would normally be 1-2 hour meal and makes it in only about a half hour.

Anyone who has been reading my reviews knows by now that I have a bit of a fetish about indexes. If you’ve ever tried to find a recipe when you can only remember the main ingredients and the name alludes you, a really good cross-referencing index is your best friend.

Terrific Indexes

If I were to be asked, “Where would I find the best index you have ever seen?” I would definitely be pointing at the index in this book. The General Recipe Index lists each recipe by main ingredient and food category. For those who remember the name of the recipe you want to create, there is also an Alphabetical Recipe Index. Together these indexes are brilliant.

This remarkable cookbook features recipes from the Northeast, South, Midwest, Southwest and West regions of the United States. Many people recognize the Taste of Home title from their many cookbooks and their magazines. This book features real recipes from real people just like you. Colored pictures and very easy to read instructions are on every page. Page 272 features the Wisconsin State Fair Cream Puffs recipe and a little history about them. Page 195 features Ozark Pudding Cake with a note of its origin. Page 431 features All-day Apple Butter that is made in your crockpot and some very interesting facts about apples. Kool-Aid pickles, horseshoe sandwiches, Chicago deep-dish pizza, chocolate fluffer-nutter sandwiches and prosciutto-stuff meat loaf are just some of the featured recipes. Maple-Cream Apple Pie, Potato Chip Cookies and Salisbury steak with gravy along with Creamed Corn with Bacon are tried and true recipes. Are you getting hungry? Just check this book out along with other great cookbooks at your local library. Enjoy!
