- Caroline Ticknor was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Benjamin Holt Ticknor and his wife Caroline Coolidge Cushman. Her paternal grandfather William Davis Ticknor was a founder of the publishing house of Ticknor & Fields. She grew up knowing family friends Mark Twain and other authors. She wrote novels, short stories, poetry, and essays published in various periodicals, but is best known for her biographies and memoirs of writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and artist Abigail "May" Alcott (younger sister of Louisa May).
