Frogs on a log (or any just about any kid-friendly animal for that matter) is about the most popular trope for a counting book there is. Kudos to Jason Travis for putting an innovative and modern spin on it with his debut children’s book entitled 10 Little Frogs. The little frogs wish on a star and become changed by their wish. One by one they go off to explore their transformation.

Kids love to play make believe and they will enjoy seeing what each of the little green jumpers gets up to, whether it is baking a cake (decorative flies included), smelling a flower, or singing a song. The small amount of text on each page along wth rhyming prose will make it easy for pre- and early readers to enjoy this book.

The true draw for this story, if you will excuse the pun, is the artwork taking up each full page. Colorful eye popping illustrations filled with tiny detail that will keep kids engaged with the story and provide a chance for parental collaboration as together they can search for the squirrel and turtle friends in every escapade. There are also easter egg style details for attentive observers to find such as Big Foot, a unicorn, and even a dragon.

This is solid debut for the Travis Brothers.

10 Little Frogs by Jason Travis was a wonderful picture book that was especially enjoyable to read aloud because of the delightful verse it's written in. I loved the wholesome humor in it and the colorful, eye-catching illustrations by Shawn Michael Travis. There's a lot to see on every page, which makes it all the more entertaining. It's one of those books that you'll probably find something new to enjoy every time you open it up. I had fun searching for the turtle and squirrel throughout the book. I really love it when children's books have additional activities such as that, but more importantly, this book can help children learn to count and subtract. Had I read this as a child, it would have helped make math more fun for me. Even as an adult, I adored this story. Five stars all the way!
