Well researched book that corrects some of the mistakes the media propagated. Content considerations: It is demeaning in some of the statements made about Indians and Eskimos (assumes them to be of minimal intelligence and childlike). Uses the old term of Eskimo rather than Inuit. Also, in speaking about one of Nome's nurses says "Like many large women, she was good natured and calm." If you are willing to sift through the flaws, it is a good book and a worthwhile read. I especially liked the emphasis on the character of these mushers who risked their lives to carry the serum to Nome. Speaking of one of them, Charles Olson, the author says this: "The response to a cry for help was never measured or limited by cost, danger, or discomfort to ones self. Olson's kind never looked at the price tag of an unselfish act or a mission of mercy. They simply gave to their utmost ability."… (meer)
