Most of this book reads like a doctoral dissertation. The structure of the book and the technical language are best suited to graduate students and specialists. It was difficult reading, but the final chapter, “Irish Protestants and the creation of the Bible Belt,” was worth the effort it took to get through the rest of the book. Although I'm tempted to suggest that interested readers concentrate on just this chapter, I won't. The continuity of culture between 17th century Ulster/southwest Scotland and modern Appalachia is a main point of the book. Recommended for specialists in Appalachian studies or Presbyterian church history.… (meer)
