A.M. Vergara

Although readable, this novel is ultimately unsatisfying.

In Firefax, Vergara sacrifices character development in favor of a relentless slog through hack-and-slash action scenes rife with peril for the protagonists. Within only a very few pages of one horrendously dark and perilous ordeal beoing resolved, another dark, and gruesome danger occurs, all too frequently with horrible results for the protagonists.

While I enjoy action-adventure books well enough, before I can enjoy such a story, I need to have developed an understanding of and empathy for the characters. Unfortunately, the characters in Firefax are too flat for me to care much about.… (meer)

A family of assassins coupled with historical fiction and the addition of sailing, intrigue, family drama and world building an entire small civilization... I thought this book would be a slam dunk for me and parts of it were; however, I had a hard time getting into the book. The plot was slow and for at least a third of the book I honestly wasn't sure where the story was headed or why I was listening to it. Once the main part of the plot started to take shape I was about half way through and at this point committed to finish. I'm glad I did. It was a decent book, but for me it was definitely just that... decent.… (meer)
