This is the catalogue which has been released to coincide with the opening of MONA - the Museum of Old and New Art - in Tasmania.

It's gorgeous, and maintains the irreverent feel of the museum itself. Essays on the history of a set of ancient coins are commingled with extracts of emailed conversations between museum staff and owner David Walsh, transcripts of interviews with artists, and the lyrics to songs written about individual pieces (which together form an album by which was commissioned for the launch and which is included (on CD) in the back of the catalogue).

An example; There several pages of full-colour plates showing scans of one of the sarcophagi (and the mummy contained within) which form part of the museum's collection. These are preceded by an anecdote explaining that the radiology department of the local hospital agreed to perform the scans in recompense after a group of their students got a bit too merry at a party held on the Moorilla grounds, and trashed part of the garden in a golf cart.

MONA is an incredible experience, and this exhibition catalogue does a great job of capturing the flavour of the place.
