Almost every day, the newspaper headilines bear witness to the appalling toll of violence directed against women. Recent surveys indicate that one in three is likely to suffer a serious attack and nowhere do women feel safe on their own. This fear has resulted in lives that are frequently deprived of joy and opportunity: women are afraid to revel in the open spaces of the countryside, they are afraid to travel on their own, to go to evening classes or simply to visit friends.

Many women are not prepared to tolerate this situation any longer-including the authors of this book. Each has dedicated herself to women's safety, either by teachnig self-defense, by campaigning for a more secure environment, or by counseling rape survivors. Here, their combined skills and experience produce the more comprehensive book available on women's self-defense. Not only are practical technques fully demonstrated in both words and picture sequences, but the sociological background is explored, important statistics are provided and the psychology of the violent male is presented in a compehensible light. Sympathetic advice is also given to those who have already suffered-or who may suffer-from violent assault.

Anyone, including the disabled or elderly, can learn simple forms of self-defense that will boost their confidence in a threatening situation. In this book you will find something that you can do to protect yourself, and you will no longer be afraid to live life to the full.

Denise Rossell-Jones was awarded her fifth dan black belt in Wad-ryu karate in 1986, one of the highest grades ever presented to a woman. She also holds a second dan black belt in judo and has studied aiidi, shin taido and tai chi chuan. Denise devotes all her spare time to the teaching of karate and self-defense for women. She also has a full-time job, as a senior computer analyst.

Diana Warren-Holland is a rape survivor. She works as a counselor for her local Rape Crisis Center, as a therapist in a Sexual Dysfunctin Clinic and as a Women's Studies tutor. Diana has made some significant contributions to radio and TV programs on sexual violence and rape.

Rachel Stewart works as a free-lance editior and writer. Sexual assault mtivated her to learn about the martial arts and she took up shotokan karate, in which she holds a first kyu brown belt. She also practises tai chi chuan. In 1986 she edited and contributed to the book The Way to the Martial Arts.

Women Against Rape, campaigning since 1976 against all forms of rape and sexual assault, are spokeswomen in the anti-rape movement. Their two books, Ask Any Wloman and The Rapist Who Pays the Rent have broken new ground and they are regularly invited to comment on TV and in the Press.
