I liked this book because of the rhyming. It wasn't forced rhyme and it flowed so nicely. The fact that the author named the bull Bill was clever and a nice touch. I also enjoyed the humanistic qualities in the bull character, how he was dressed up so nicely and the details in its face to match the distinct emotion of sadness was very engaging and represented the language well. I liked that there was a triumph over prejudice. The bull was constantly reminded that he was not welcomed into the shop, but with the help of others he was happy in the end with his new china tea cup set.
I also liked how the bull wrote a thank you letter in the end to the women who did him a favor. It expresses appreciation. I thought it was really interesting and different that the book was written and illustrated in a Victorian style, the details, again, kept me interested and were enjoyable.
The story pushes readers to be accepting of people and to show acts of kindness. This is the big idea of the story. I think another theme or lesson is that don't give up on something you love and you have the right to be anywhere you'd like. I say this because the bull had a passion for china and even though he wasn't welcomed, he didn't let it get in the way.
