Unfortunately, few countries or ethnicities are represented. The recipes are Japanese, Jewish, Greek, Italian, Czechoslovakian, Dutch, Mexican, and Russian. Each section focuses on one grandmother, usually the 1st or 2nd generation in the United States. . Introductory material is followed by generally nice renditions of recipes, almost all of which will be familiar to anyone who has perused numerous cookbooks.

On my to-try list is the Czech dish Svickova (marinated beef). It sounds like it might be a rival to sauerbraten. I would, however, use little or no sugar in the gravy.… (meer)
